The Virtuous Cycle DLC for Mortal Shell contains a new weapon called the Axatana, the weapon of Hadern, the Deliverer. The Axatana can transform between an axe and dual katanas on demand, allowing its user to have more versatility in their combat. Long before Axatana can be used, however, Hadern will need to be defeated.

The Virtuous Cycle DLC offers a roguelike experience, where players make their way through a unique playthrough every time in this game mode. It offers players a chance to further develop their own combat style in Mortal Shell, with more than 100 unique upgrades. The DLC also includes the Hadern Shell, which has the ability to recollect skills from all other shells in the game. To begin The Virtuous Cycle, speak with the Twin-Sister at Fallgrim Tower and enter the Reverie to enter an alternate version of the Tower. Interacting with the pillar on the sister’s left will begin the Cycle.

The first step in earning the Axatana begins with collecting all weapons. Afterward, head to Fallgrim Tower and speak with Hadern. This will start the final trial called “One Final Glimpse.” This is where Hadern and his Axatana must be fought and defeated. The fight is divided into two stages, the first being Hadern using the dual katanas, and the second being Hadern using the axe mode. Hadern is agile in the first stage, and while the axe slows him down in the second he deals much more damage. As with all fights in Mortal Shells, the fight against Hadern is similar to Dark Souls bosses.

After defeating Hadern, approach his sarcophagus to claim his shell. Speak with Hadern in Fallgrim Tower again and the Axatana will be located on the wall beside him. The Axatana can now be used, and it can be upgraded in the Mortal Shell Workbench for increased combat proficiency. Additionally, an achievement/trophy called “Some Assembly Required” will be unlocked the first time Axatana’s mode is switched.

The Axatana is an extremely powerful weapon to use, and can be earned as soon as the tutorial phase is completed. Earning Axatana early in a new game is challenging, but it makes short work of enemies after it is acquired. The Virtuous Cycle is free DLC in Mortal Shells until Aug. 23.
