Toad Town serves as the hub in Paper Mario: The Origami King, and Mario reaches it fairly early in the game. Upon arrival, Mario and Olivia find that the town has been overrun by Giant Paper Macho Goombas and all the Toads who lived and worked there are nowhere to be found. As Mario explores, he will come upon a treasure chest on the second floor of the Toad Town Mansion that is behind a locked door and across a giant gap in the flooring. Try as he might, Mario will not be able to cross this gap, at least, not at first.

Players should do their best not to forget this chest or the location, as eventually, Mario will be able to access it. He simply needs to progress farther in the game before that can happen. In fact, players won’t be able to access this particular chest until Mario finds and rescues the owner of the mansion from Shroom City in the Scorching Sandpaper Desert. Here’s how to access the Toad Town treasure chest.

Find and Rescue the Owner of Toad Town Mansion in Paper Mario: The Origami King

Mario will need to complete the Red and Blue Streamer stages to get to Shroom City in the game. There, the owner of the Toad Town Mansion can be found stuck on the city sign.

Unlike other Hidden Toads, Mario will have to find a way up to the sign to reach the Toad Town Mansion owner. He should head toward the first building near the save point. He will need to pass behind the building to find a stack of crates like a staircase to climb to the roof.

From the roof of the building, Mario will see a seesaw next to the building with a Snifit on it. He will need to line himself up and jump down onto the seesaw to launch the Snifit at the Shroom City sign, knocking loose a bunch of paper power-ups, a new hammer, and the Hidden Toad.

To free him, Mario should do what he would with any other Hidden Toad and hit him with the hammer. He will head off to Toad Town.

Open the Toad Town Chest in Paper Mario: The Origami King

Players can either continue with the story and wait to return to Toad Town or use a Fast Travel pipe to go back immediately. Either way, upon returning to the mansion, Mario will learn that the Toad is so grateful, he has unlocked all the doors in his Mansion for Mario. He will also reward Mario 10,000 coins.

Mario will need to have fixed the staircase at the Mansion to access the Mansion’s roof and the chest. They can do this at the blue umbrella at the outdoor cafe to the right of the Mansion.

Mario can enter the second floor of the mansion from the fixed staircase to the roof. This will place him on the other side of the gap in the floor, right near the treasure chest. From there, he should remove the sticker near the gap in the floor and release a bridge to close the gap.

He can then get to the treasure in the chest, Collectible Treasure No. 13 Log Cabin. This is one of the 120 Collectible Treasures players need to find to complete the game 100% and unlock the secret ending.
