The new Viking survival game, Valheim, released to Steam Early Access barely a month ago, but talented modders have already begun adding and improving features in the game. Though Valheim does not have official mod support or plans to add official mod support down the road, that has not stopped modders from making changes that allow fans to experience the game in new ways. The recent release of the Valheim Plus Mod gave players advanced features, like improved building options and the ability to change server caps. Now, players can go from looking over their Viking character’s shoulder to stepping into their boots with the First Person View Mod by Kailen37.

With the Valheim First Person View Mod installed, players can zoom in to switch to a first-person camera. Some processes, like aiming with a bow or fighting using a shield, are a little difficult in first-person. Still, while creator Kailen37 says the mod is still a work in progress, fans who have used it say many of the game’s features, including sailing a raft, karve, or longboat, look even better from a first-person point-of-view. Here’s how to download, install, and play the Valheim First Person View Mod.

How to Install the Valheim First Person View Mod

Players will want to visit Nexus Mods to download the First Person View Mod for Valheim. They will also need to download the BepInExPack, created by denikson, from either Thunderstore.io or GitHub if they do not already have it installed.

Installation of BepInEx is required to be able to use the First Person View Mod, so players should do that first. Instructions for installation on Windows appear below:

  • Extract the contents of the denikson-BepInExPack_Valheim-X.X.XXX.zip into a separate folder. Do not extract these files into the game folder.
  • Open the BepInExPack_Valheim folder. Use Ctrl + A and Ctrl + C to copy all the files in this folder.
  • Open the game root folder. Players can usually find this by opening Steam, navigating to Library, right-clicking Valheim, navigating to Manage, and choosing Browse Local Files.
  • Use Ctrl + V to paste the copied mod files into the game folder.
  • Launch Valheim and make sure the console pops up. This will automatically create a new plugins folder within the BepInEx folder.

Players will then need to install the First Person View Mod. Installation instructions appear below:

  • Extract the CameraMod.dll file from the zipped mod folder.
  • Open the game root folder. Players can usually find this by opening Steam, navigating to Library, right-clicking Valheim, navigating to Manage, and choosing Browse Local Files.
  • Open the BepInEx folder and then open the plugins folder.
  • Move the extracted CameraMod.dll file in the plugins folder. The file path should be something like …steamappscommonValheimBepInExplugins
  • Launch Valheim to begin playing with first-person camera.

The first time players launch Valheim with the First Person View Mod installed, the game will automatically generate a configuration file that will reload any time players press OK on the in-game settings menu. This will allow players to experiment with different first-person options during gameplay.

Players will have the option to toggle in and out of first-person whenever they want with the First Person Mod installed. They can use the scroll wheel on their mouse to zoom into first-person mode and back out into third-person mode as needed. This is especially useful when bow hunting in Valheim, as it is difficult to aim from first-person.

It may be a good idea for players to return to the vanilla version’s point-of-view when fighting enemies like Greydwarfs and Fulings, as combat can be a little choppy while in first-person mode. Blocking hits will often block the player’s ability to see the enemy, which can make fighting more difficult. However, for other in-game activities, like chopping trees, exploring the various biomes, sailing, and gathering resources, the First Person View Mod allows a new level of immersion to the Valheim Viking experience.
