How to Install (& Play) the Vigilante Mod in Among Us

One thing that has been missing from Among Us that tends to be present in other similar social deduction games is a set of roles for crewmates, but some creative players in the community have found a way to mod these in anyway. In most social deduction games, like Werewolf, Mafia, and even Town of Salem, each regular citizen will have a role in town. This role has a special function that can be performed at various intervals to give the average citizens an advantage against the antagonists. Popular options include a Doctor, who can revive or otherwise save a dead character, a Jester, who tries to look as guilty as possible and be killed by his peers to win, or a Vigilante who can protect the average character from the antagonists.

While Among Us has tasks, these are not necessarily special functions or benefits assigned to one member of the group. The Vigilante mod adds a role for crewmates that will be randomly assigned just the same as the Impostor role. The Vigilante mod allows one player on the crewmate side to have a kill button that can be used to protect the others from the Impostor. Where crewmates are typically defenseless during a classic round of Among Us, they can now fight back. However, if the Vigilante fails in their responsibilities, they must face dire consequences that can lose the game for crewmates. Here’s how to install and play the Vigilante role mod for Among Us.

How to Install the Vigilante Mod for Among Us

Players should note that it is usually only possible to mod Among Us on PC. Players on mobile may not be able to access and play this mod. It is also common for mods not to work unless every single player in the lobby is using it, so players will need to make sure everyone in their group has downloaded and installed the mod first.

Players will need to download the Vigilante mod files. There are several places players can get this from, but the safest comes from Woodi-dev on GitHub. Though the role has a different name, it plays essentially the same way. If players would prefer to use a different file that assigns the role specifically of Vigilante, they can find others online. Certain versions have slight differences from the typical rules for the role.

It is important for players to download the mod for their specific game version, or the game will not launch at all. Players should try to update their game prior to modding to make sure they have the latest version.

Players will need to make a copy of their game’s root directory. The file path for this is typically Steamlibrary > Steamapps > common > Among Us. They should name the copy something like Steamlibrary > Steamapps > common > Among Us Vigilante Mod. Then, players should navigate to their download location for the zipped mod folder and choose Extract All. When prompted, they should make the extraction location the copy of their game’s root directory.

To launch Among Us with the mod installed, players will need to enter the Vigilante Mod folder they created and select AmongUs.exe. This will open the game with the Vigilante role available. Lobby hosts are also able to set the visibility of the Vigilante in the game settings menu while this mod is installed. Players can use this mod on public servers, or they can use custom server regions, included with the mod, to join private servers. This mod also works with the Proximity Voice Chat mod.

How to Play the Vigilante Mod for Among Us

With the Vigilante role, a match in Among Us is mostly the same as always. Crewmates still complete tasks, and Impostors still sabotage and kill crewmates. The major difference is that the character assigned the role of Vigilante also has a kill button and can try to kill Impostors during a round rather than waiting to deliberate and vote.

Like Impostors, the Vigilante can execute anyone if they get close enough. However, if they kill one of their fellow crewmates, they will also be killed. This can give crewmates a possible advantage, allowing them some protection and an easier way to eliminate the Impostors. It can also help the Impostors win the game. If the Vigilante accidentally kills an ally, two crewmates will have been eliminated from the game, giving Impostors an even easier path to victory. The Vigilante will also always have a target on their back from the Impostors, which can add suspense to a round.

The addition of roles to Among Us can keep the game exciting and give crewmates more of a chance to balance the odds against the Impostors. As more content creators and modders add to the traditional format of Among Us, it is possible developer Innersloth will consider implementing similar ideas into the base game in future updates.
