Spotify has a neat little feature for Google’s Wear OS that allows users to download music to their smartwatch for offline listening. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 and other Wear OS smartwatches can take full advantage of this feature and having music downloaded to a smartwatch can come in handy for many reasons. Here’s how to get started and download music so it is ready for listening offline.

Previous to Spotify adding this feature, users could stream music to their watch when connected to the internet. This was dependent on the watch, as only some watches have cellular capabilities that allow the user to leave their phone and still access the internet. One issue with the previous approach was that, if someone happened across a dead spot, the ability to keep on listening to their music disappeared.

With Spotify’s offline playback feature, users can download albums, playlists, and songs to their watch without the need for an internet connection. To download tunes to a Galaxy Watch 4, open the app and go to the audio track or album to be downloaded. Next, hit “download to watch.” That’s it. This simple two-step process does need to be repeated for each song or album the user wants to download, but once downloaded, the user can connect their Bluetooth headphones to the watch and forget about their phone completely.

Getting Started & Downloading On Other Wear OS Watches

Spotify’s offline listening feature is available on all watches running Wear OS 2.0 or higher, including smartwatches from Mobvoi, Fossil, and Suunto. As far as how many songs can be downloaded, that’s completely dependent on the Android watch’s storage, which can vary from watch to watch. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, for instance, has 16GB of internal storage so it can handle quite a library of songs. Within the app, there is a Downloads section to access songs loaded locally onto the watch, making managing local content simple. If a little green checkmark is next to a song or album, it’s downloaded and ready to play offline.

As long as the user has Spotify Premium, all of what the app has to offer is available for download. The feature is also available to Spotify Free users, but in a more limited capacity, and mainly limited to the downloading of their favorite podcasts. For reference, the ability to download songs on a smartwatch is not just for Galaxy Watch 4 and Wear OS smartwatches, as the same feature is also available to Apple Watch wearers as well.
