When players start Valheim, they are deposited into this Norse version of purgatory with merely the clothes on their backs and must find a way to hunt for supplies and resources. In Valheim, players take the role of a Viking who was slain in battle and brought to the tenth world to slay some of Odin’s ancient enemies. At the start of the game, they won’t have tools to help them gather resources and will likely only have their fists for protection. As they explore, they can find materials to build a home base, tools, and weapons fit for fighting any of the animals or monsters they come in contact with and shaping and taming the landscape.

One of the first weapons a player will have access to is the Crude Bow. This bow is made from Wood and Leather Scraps and is not very strong. Players can use it to hunt deer, but for anything larger or more dangerous, they are going to need an upgrade. The next step up from the Crude Bow is the Fine Wood Bow, and players can craft this at the Workbench using Fine Wood, Core Wood, and Deer Hide. The Fine Wood bow produces knockback and can deal more damage to enemies and critters. The problem is that Fine Wood takes a while to obtain. Only Birch Trees in the Meadows biome serve as the most consistent source of Fine Wood, and these can only be cut down with a Bronze Axe. Players are unlikely to get Bronze until later in the game, but there is still a way to get Fine Wood early if players are willing to take a little risk. Here’s how to craft a Fine Wood Bow in Valheim.

Get Fine Wood Early in Valheim

Players can always wait to craft the Fine Wood Bow until after they have collected Copper and Tin Ore and smelted some Bronze. To do this, they will need the Antler Pickaxe. The progression of tasks to complete to get Bronze appears below:

  • Upgrade the Workbench to Level 2.
  • Summon Eikthyr, the first boss, and defeat him.
  • Craft the Antler Pickaxe.
  • Collect Copper Ore and Tin Ore from the Black Forest using the Pickaxe.
  • Craft a Charcoal Kiln.
  • Craft a Smelter.
  • Cook the Copper Ore and Tin Ore in the Smelter to get pure Copper and Tin Bars.
  • Craft a Forge
  • Use the Forge to combine Copper and Tin into Bronze.
  • Use the Forge to craft the Bronze Axe
  • Use the Bronze Axe to chop down a Birch Tree.
  • Collect Fine Wood and craft the Fine Wood Bow.

It’s a fairly long and involved process that players will eventually complete. However, if players aren’t wanting to wait, there is another way to get Fine Wood fast.

For this trick to work, players are going to need to find a Troll in the Meadows biome, or anywhere else with a large volume of Birch Trees. Players should specifically seek a Troll with a large club. When these clubs hit trees, they tend to create piles of wood and can even splinter a tree completely.

Players will need to engage the Troll in combat near the Birch Trees and position themselves so the Troll’s swing with their club will connect with the tree. When the Troll moves to strike, players will need to dodge the blow at the last minute, allowing the Troll to only hit the tree. This should result in piles of Fine Wood players can loot. They will need to repeat this process a few times until the tree is destroyed to get the maximum amount of Fine Wood. They can then take the Fine Wood and use it at the Workbench to craft their Fine Wood bow earlier in the game.

This method is dangerous and risky, and players have a good chance of dying, so it may be a good idea to craft a small base near the trees and save often to ensure they don’t need to take a long hike to get back to the spot where they died and try again.
