Naming a tamed animal is one of the many customization options added to Valheim in the Hearth & Home update, and it’s only available after an animal has been tamed. The three animals that can be tamed in Valheim are the Boar, Wolf, and Lox. Each of these animals will have a certain amount of stars to indicate how powerful they are, with more stars meaning more power. Animals with more stars will drop more resources when they’re killed, even after they’re tamed.

Taming creatures in Valheim usually requires getting them into a pen and feeding them certain foods until they no longer attack the Viking. Once animals are tamed, Vikings can enter the pen, approach, and pet them. They can also use the menu options when approaching to rename their new pet.

Naming a tamed animal is straightforward. Players must approach the tamed animal and hold down the left shift key to bring up the name input screen. Boars, Wolves, and Lox can all be named after being tamed. Additionally, these three animals can all be bred, and their offspring can be named as well.

How to Tame and Name Pets in Valheim

Boars are the easiest creature to tame in Valheim. The first step is to build a pen. Then, Vikings must lure the Boar into the enclosure either with food or by having them give chase. Boars can be tamed by feeding them carrots, as well as berries and mushrooms now thanks to the Hearth & Home update, and every time they feed, they’ll become more domesticated. Vikings should feed them repeatedly from afar until they become tame. If two tame Boars are fed together, they’ll breed, passing on their star rating to the piglet.

Wolves are tamed in a similar manner to Boars, but instead of berries and produce, Wolves can be tamed with raw meat. Additionally, Wolves can only be found in the mountains, so wearing frost-resistant gear like the Wolf Armor is necessary when looking for a few to domesticate. They’re more aggressive than Boars, so players will need to be careful when trying to tame and name a Wolf in Valheim.

Lox can be tamed and now ridden as mounts as part of the Hearth & Home update in Valheim. Players can build an enclosure and feed them Cloudberries to domesticate them. Vikings need a Lox Saddle to ride tamed Lox. Crafting a Lox Saddle requires 10 Leather Scraps, 20 Linen Thread, and 15 Black Metal.

Lox won’t attack an enemy while they’re being mounted, and melee weapons or a bow can’t be used while riding. Lox are hardy creatures and can withstand fights against one or two enemies, but they can die easily against large groups. Additionally, riding a Lox increases the Riding skill that was added to the Hearth & Home update, and wild Lox will no longer attack players who have a tamed Lox.
