How to Play the Spy Mode mod in Among Us

No longer are Impostors allowed to run around unchecked in Among Us thanks to the addition of the new Spy Role Mod. One of the latest trends for Among Us is to introduce special roles for crewmates into a game. In addition to completing tasks, certain crewmates receive a few bonus functions in their role. For example, with the Sheriff mod installed, one crewmate has the ability to kill Impostors. But, if they’re wrong and kill a fellow crewmate, they also die. By contrast, the Doctor mod allows one crewmate to revive dead crewmates, but the previously dead crewmates are not allowed to say who killed them. Now, popular YouTube creator SSundee has added a Spy role to Among Us, allowing one crewmate to eavesdrop on conversations and sometimes even watch the Impostor make a kill.

In the Spy Role Mod, one crewmate is randomly assigned to be the Spy. They have access to extra buttons on the left side of their screen to monitor every character’s vitals, access the security cameras from anywhere, and even go completely invisible. This can make things difficult for Impostors who will have to eliminate the spy first or risk killing in front of an invisible Impostor. Here’s how to play the Spy Role Mod in Among Us.

How to Play the Spy Mode mod in Among Us

At the time of writing, there is no public download link yet available for the Spy Role mod. Players wanting to experience it will either need to join a server with the mod installed or wait for a modder to release a version anyone can add to their game. Because it is new and appears to be rather popular with SSundee’s audience, it is possible the Spy Role mod will catch on become more widely available eventually.

The rules for a game of Among Us that uses the Spy mod are exactly the same as the classic game. The role simply pushes the odds in favor of crewmates, giving them an advantage and a form of defense against the Impostors.

When a crewmate is assigned the role of Spy, they will likely want to be quiet about it. Because of all they can do to thwart an Impostor’s plans, they will have a major target on their back if their identity is revealed. Other crewmates can spoil this, revealing the Spy’s identity if they witness the spy going invisible, but this is likely to result in the Spy being killed quickly and put the crewmates at a disadvantage.

The Spy can watch the security cameras to see any suspicious activity and find out where every character is on the map. They can also check every character’s vitals and see if someone has been killed. Finally, they can go completely invisible whenever they want and can follow suspicious figures around. In meetings, they can share what they have seen to help convince the other crewmates of who should be ejected.

Constantly calling out other players as “sus” will likely draw unwanted attention to the Spy and make them seem suspicious too. The Spy can prove their identity by using their invisibility power in front of the others. This move comes with high risk, but, if an Impostor tries to falsely claim they are the Spy to avoid suspicion or as an alibi for disappearing, this can be one way to prove otherwise and get them ejected. Another way for the Spy to prove their role might be to ask who found the body, then, if the Spy witnessed the murder, offer to “guess” where that body was found specifically. This can let both the crewmates and the Impostors know that the Spy was honestly watching and help strengthen the validity of their claims.

This mod works very well with the Proximity Voice Chat mod because it will allow the Spy to listen to other players’ conversations while invisible. In SSundee’s video below, he goes invisible and overhears another player admitting to killing a crewmate. He chooses to reveal that information to help his team to victory.

While there are no official plans to add roles to the base game of Among Us, the idea is gaining traction and might be a good opportunity for InnerSloth to continue improving on the traditional social deduction format.
