Players are encouraged to experiment freely with character creation in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous with the option to easily respec any character. Following the success of Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Owlcat Games released Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, the indirect sequel to the acclaimed first title. After raising over $2 million USD during the Kickstarter campaign back in February 2020, the sequel set out to build on its engine and introduce new character classes and the mythic progression system from the Pathfinder tabletop RPG.

Like its predecessor, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous follows an adventure path of the same name which was originally published in 2013. The game closely follows the rule set for the Pathfinder tabletop RPG, which can be very complex and intimidating. As such, new players might find themselves overwhelmed with the many choices available while creating and leveling up their character. If a mistake was made, or it’s time for a change, players can take an opportunity to respec.

To respec, players must first play the game up until they reach the Defender’s Heart Inn. In a corner of the inn is a war room where Hilor, the NPC responsible for respecs, is located. The player character must talk to Hilor and chose the dialogue option “My companions and I need good training” to open a window depicting the main character and their companions. Choosing the main character will allow players to make changes to their skills, appearance, and more. Choosing one of the Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous companions will reset them back to their stats from when they were first recruited. The first respec will be free but the ones after will have a hefty cost in gold. Those playing on PC also have the option of using mods to respec.

Use The Free Respec in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous For Prestige Class Builds

One of the major appeals to fans of the Pathfinder tabletop RPG is the complexity and customizability when it comes to character creation. However, players may notice that some special classes appear grayed out. These are known as prestige classes, and players must complete a set of requirements to choose one. To avoid having to plan out these requirements during character creation, it might be simpler to just access them by completing a respec.

Beyond Level 5, players should simply head over to Hilor, reset their desired character, and choose the requirements they need to access the desired prestige class. It should be noted that prestige classes might not be recommended for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous beginners, as these classes usually require further pre-planning to be useful in the later levels.

It is important to note that, before starting the game, players should make sure the “Character Retrain” option in the game’s difficulty settings is enabled so they have access to the respec function. As the game progresses, Hilor may also eventually change locations. From Chapter Three onward, players will be able to find him on the second floor of the nameless inn in Drezen.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is available for PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and MacOS.
