As players guide protagonist Joker through his exciting double life in Persona 5 Royal, they will likely find him falling in love with one of the many Confidants he meets along the way. Though not the main focus of the game, getting to know others is a part of the experience. Additionally, Joker is a male high school student by day and a dungeon-crawling vigilante by night, and romance will end up on his mind at some point. Joker’s Confidants in Persona 5 Royal are intrinsically linked to one of the Arcana used to craft, create, and level up a Persona, so improving relations with each one can offer bonuses when using a Persona of the associated Arcana and when interacting with that character during the typical school day. If the player wants Joker and a certain Confidant to be more than just friends, they will need to have him cooperate with that Confidant and climb the friendship ranks until the correct options open up.

In Persona 5 Royal, Joker can pursue a romance with his homeroom teacher, Sadayo Kawakami. Kawakami works as a teacher by day and a maid by night, and because she is only available after the end of May and on certain specific days of the week, players will need to work hard to get romantically involved. They’ll also need a fairly large savings, as Kawakami will only come visit and allow Joker to progress the romance if he has enough money available to pay for her cleaning and cooking services. If players are looking to try and win Kawakami’s heart in Persona 5 Royal, here’s how to get started.

How To Romance Sadayo Kawakami in Persona 5 Royal

Because Kawakami’s Arcana, Temperance, won’t unlock until the end of May, players looking to enter a romance with her will want to progress through the main campaign as they normally would. During this time, it’s best to complete the first and second Palaces to give Joker the maximum amount of time with Kawakami.

A few days after completing the second Palace, Yuuki Mishima will bring Joker and Ryuji a maid service flyer. When they call the number, Kawakami will arrive, but will leave almost immediately. She will ask Joker and the others not to say anything about it.

At school the following day, Joker can speak to Kawakami again as she is chided by Ms. Chouno. If Joker helps her, she will provide a number for Joker to call at night from the phone at the Leblanc Cafe. Players will also want to have reached Level 3 Guts, at the Staunch stat, or they won’t be able to contact Kawakami this way.

During the conversation, Joker and Kawakami will negotiate, and Kawakami will agree to help him with afterschool chores. This will officially unlock Rank 1 with Kawakami, begins the Temperance storyline, and grants Joker the ability to Slack Off in Kawakami’s class.

As Joker improves his relationship with Kawakami, he can unlock other benefits. These include:

  • Rank 3: Housekeeping – Joker can request Kawakami make coffee or do laundry
  • Rank 5: Free Time – Kawakami will help Joker get free time in other classes
  • Rank 7: Super Housekeeping – Joker can request Kawakami make curry or infiltration tools
  • MAX: Special Massage – Joker can request a special massage from Kawakami after going into the Metaverse. This will allow him to go out at night.

To reach higher ranks, Joker will need to be sure to spend time with Kawakami during her off time.

Unlike most other Confidants, Kawakami is only available on Friday and Saturday nights and during the day or night when it rains. This means players will need to balance time they spend dungeon-crawling and time they spend with Kawakami to make sure they advance her Arcana Rank enough to begin the romance. She can come over most nights to help Joker do his chores, but he will not be able to advance her Rank during these times. Players will also need to focus on making money, as Kawakami will only visit both to advance her Arcana and to do chores for Joker if he has enough yen to pay for her services.

To more quickly advance Kawakami’s Rank, players will want to choose dialogue responses that are confident and who take an interest in her. Kawakami does not want a partner who will simply agree with her at all times. Joker should make bold statements, ask how she’s doing, disagree with her, or ask her questions when she begins to engage in self-doubt. Of course, she still doesn’t want to be told what to do, and a Joker who wants to romance her should select responses that allow and encourage her to trust herself and her choices.

In addition, because there are so few times where Joker and Kawakami can officially meet to advance her Arcana, players should consider supplementing time spent by giving Kawakami gifts. Kawakami seems to really like sweets, jewelry and electronics, and perfumes and incense. Each gift can provide an extra two or three Social Points. The breakdown for these Points are:

  • +2 Social Points: Custard Cake, Chocolate Truffles, Designer Perfume, Incense Set, Rakugo Collection, Rose Bouquet
  • +2 Social Points, Romance Only: Crimson Lipstick
  • +3 Social Points: Best of KGB49, Idol Pins, Digital Camera, Face Beautifier, High-Performance Electric Toothbrush, Super Noisy Alarm Clock
  • +3 Social Points, Romance Only: Heart Necklace, Heart Ring, Robot Vacuum

Any of the gifts marked for romance only can only be given after Joker reaches Rank 8 with Kawakami.

At Rank 8, players will unlock a special Kawakami Mementos quest called “A Teacher Maid to Suffer.” During school, Joker will stumble upon a pair of parents harassing Kawakami for money. Joker and the Phantom Thieves will need to enter Mementos to change the hearts of the two parents. This quest takes place in the Path of Chemdah: Area 7.

Once this quest is complete and Joker speaks with Kawakami again, she will express a desire to quit the maid business. Players will need to select “I want to keep seeing you” for Prompt 3, then “I mean what I say” as a follow-up. This will officially unlock Kawakami’s romance.

To complete Kawakami’s Arcana and max her rank, players should have Joker call her again after starting the romance. They will share an evening together, and the player can choose any dialogue that feels right to them. From that point forward, the two will continue dating. Players will unlock Kawakami’s Special Massage ability, have the opportunity to unlock Ardha, the Temperance Arcana Persona, and take Kawakami on special dates for holidays.
