As players grind and reach the opportunity to fight The Jailer in the endgame of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, they will eventually get access to legendary crafting. Players who learn to craft legendary items can take a base item, like armor or an accessory, and increase its power. Since the beginning of World of Warcraft back in 2004, gear players could find and use was ranked based on quality. The rankings were Poor, Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, or Legendary, with Legendary being the best and therefore most difficult equipment to acquire. Shadowlands marks the introduction of an ability to craft Legendary items.

Players will need to reach the new max level cap at Level 60 and join a Covenant to gain access to Legendary Crafting. They’ll need to prepare to do quite a few quests, especially in The Maw. As such, they’ll also need to keep close watch on their Eye of the Jailer to avoid dying or needing to leave The Maw until the next day while in the middle of a quest line. Though characters can only have one Legendary item at a time, and though players will need to farm a new currency to purchase one, these items can greatly improve gameplay for characters of almost any race and class. Here’s how to unlock Legendary crafting in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.

How to Unlock Legendary Crafting in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

Before players can begin crafting Legendary items, they will need to complete the first chapter of their Covenant’s campaign. They will need to collect and deposit 1000 Anima, complete the Soulbinds tutorial, return to Oribos, and speak to Bolvar. This will send the character back to The Maw and open the second chapter of the Covenant campaign.

This second chapter will take the player to Torghast and better acquaint them with The Maw. This is where players meet Ve’nari, who they will purchase upgrades from using Stygia. Ve’nari will task players with rescuing Lost Souls, which will become a weekly activity players can complete to earn Renown.

Once players finish Ve’nari’s quests, she will send them to Torghast, the major dungeon of The Maw. To the right of the entrance to Torghast, players will find a key to the Runecarver’s chamber inside the dungeon. Players will need to enter the chamber and speak to the Runecarver. He will give them several quests to complete, and, following the end of these quests, the player will earn the ability to craft Legendary items.

First, they will need to kill an enemy to get one of the Runecarver’s Memories. When Memories are returned to the Runecarver, he will remember a certain power and add that to a piece of armor. Each class will have four Memories available at the start, plus four more for their spec and generic powers. Memories also drop anywhere in the Shadowlands and can be rewards for completing quests and killing bosses throughout the game.

After killing an enemy and returning some Memories to the Runecarver, players will need to collect 5 embers from the Cauldron and bring them to Ve’nari. These will be used to purchase a quest item. Players should then return to the Runecarver and release him from at least one of his bindings to receive two final quests.

Players will need to gather 1250 Soul Ash. This is another currency in Shadowlands. To get it, players will need to clear layers of the chambers of Torghast. Until December 8, players only have access to the first three layers of the two available chambers in the dungeon, and clearing it will only provide a little more than half the required Soul Ash.

Once players have enough Soul Ash, they will need to return to the Runecarver to fully unlock Legendary Crafting. The second quest the Runecarver offers them is optional but rewards Legendary Crafting component recipes and might be worth doing, especially for players with characters in a crafting profession.

From that point on, players can see the different Legendaries available and what materials are required by interacting with the Runecarver. Most Legendaries require players to have a base Legendary component that the character can create if they are in a crafting profession or purchase or find elsewhere, Soul Ash, two Missives created by an Inscriptionist, and the Runecarver’s Memory for the recipe. Later, players can bring a higher-level base item and more Soul Ash to receive upgrades.

The quest line to unlock Legendary Crafting is long and involved, and players will need to be careful. Many of the things they do in The Maw come at a hefty price; their Eye of the Jailer meter will increase. At each of the five Eye of the Jailer levels, the Jailer will try more insistently to kill the character. Depending on what kinds of enemies the player kills in The Maw, there is a chance they will need to spread this quest line over a few days to avoid dying at the hands of the Jailer or his minions.
