Though the initial reception to Pokémon Unite’s initial reveal was rather lukewarm, the sizable player base the game garnered on its release day shows promise for the game’s popularity. In this spinoff, the beloved monster-collecting franchise from Game Freak sets aside its traditional RPG roots to become a MOBA tactics game. Given that the game is in an entirely new genre than what fans of the series are used to, it’s no surprise that there is a myriad of changes, including how they go about acquiring new Pokémon.

In Unite, players don’t catch new Pokémon with Pokéballs like they normally do in the mainline games. Instead, they must obtain each creature’s respective Unite License, which allows them to be selected and used in matches. There is a multitude of ways to get a hold of these licenses, so here’s every possible method to build up a roster of combatants.

How to Get More Unite Licenses

Unite Battle Committee

  • Pokémon Unite has three stores: the Aeos Emporium, which sells avatar outfits, Zirco Trading, which has costumes for Pokémon to wear, and the Unite Battle Committee, which sells Unite Licenses. To access the stores, all players need to do is select the shopping cart icon on the main menu. Upon doing so, they can browse what licenses are currently available and sort them by their role in battle, such as support or defender. To purchase them, players can use the Aeos Coins they obtain from winning battles and fulfilling certain challenges or events.

Challenges

  • By selecting the clipboard on the menu, players can check out the various challenges that Unite has availableCompleting certain objectives, such as completing the tutorial or participating in a specified number of battles, will net them Aeos Coins. Each day has a different reward for completing each challenge, and the final reward might be a Unite License, as with Crustle in the Beginner Challenge.

Reaching a New Trainer Level

  • When players win Unite Battles, they’ll earn experience points. After earning a certain amount, they’ll reach a higher level. Every level has a different reward to claim, and some of these prizes are new Pokémon to use. To check out how far one has gotten and grab these rewards, press the R button on the Switch. As of the game’s launch, there are only two Pokémon that are obtainable this way, but it’s better to get them here than to spend Aeos Coins on them.

Events

  • Players will occasionally have a chance to receive new licenses from events. Some events are cleared by completing certain objectives, while others are obtainable by logging in for a repeated number of days.

Mail

  • Lastly, the game may give away free licenses using the in-game mail feature. Though they’re guaranteed licenses, it’s not the most reliable method due to how they’re only given away on certain occasions, like the game’s launch. Regardless, be sure to check the in-game letters every so often to see if there are any giveaways to claim.

Pokémon Unite is available for Switch and Mobile.
