Season 3 of Black Ops: Cold War is well underway with tons of new editions for players to get their hands on. However, it’s a mid-Season Two weapon that has the attention of some. The Crossbow was added to Cold War on March 24th after being teased and accidentally released earlier. While it’s not the most viable weapon in competitive PvP, Zombie fans can have fun harnessing their inner Daryl Dixon.

What Season 3 of Black Ops: Cold War did add were unique Zombie Mode unlock challenges for every unlockable weapon. Players who missed on past seasons’ battle passes or weren’t able to complete the challenges in multiplayer can now turn to Zombie Mode to get their hands on some new firepower. This guide is all about the Crossbow and how to unlock it in Cold War Zombies.

Cold War Zombies: How to Unlock the Crossbow in Zombie Mode

To unlock the Crossbow in multiplayer, players must get three one-shot, one-kill medals in 15 different matches while using a weapon with no attachments. This can be done with a base sniper rifle, for instance, but unless players are quick-scope gods, they’ll have a hard time keeping their K/D up while completing the challenge. Thankfully, they can turn to Zombie Mode for better luck.

To unlock the Crossbow in Cold War Zombies, players must kill 50 special enemies with a double Pack-A-Punched special weapon. In most cases, as players probably don’t have the Ballistic Knife yet, they’ll be using the M79 or ‘Thumper,” as old-school COD players prefer to call it. Special enemies include Mimics, Tempests, Megatons, Manglers, and Krasney Soldats.  Of course, players can still use a triple Pack-A-Punched special weapon. Double is the minimum for this challenge.

All of these Zombie Mode unlock challenges are best completed in Outbreak Mode as players can milk the first few waves for the most points and kills. They’ll need 20,000 minimum to double-pack. They can also rely on finding a Thumper as loot from dead elites like Megatons and Krasney Soldats. Players can air on the safe side and just spawn in with the Thumper equipped to their Loadout. However, they’ll be stuck with it for the early stages and need to double-pack it at least.

Ultimately, the best strategy is for players to play Outbreak as they usually would. Find a Thumper on the ground and keep it as a secondary. When they have money to spare between rounds four and eight, players can go on a special enemy killing spree. Players should make sure to complete all side objectives for the most extra cash and free perks. There’s a good chance HVTs and Golden Loot Chests will drop Thumpers.

If players are so lucky to find an Epic or Legendary Thumper, they can kill two birds with one stone (or two zombies with one grenade) and make progress towards unlocking the Ballistic Knife well. To unlock the Ballistic Knife in Cold War Zombies, players must get 300 kills with a melee or special weapon of Epic or Legendary quality.
