PlayStation 4’s last big exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima, feels like an amalgamation of many other games. The Assassin’s Creed series is clearly the biggest influence, but the DNA of the whole open-world genre is on full display here, and with a meticulous degree of polish. It’s a beautiful game where players can spend just as much time finding golden birds as they do fighting off the Mongol invasion.

But players can also get a hint of developer Sucker Punch Productions’ past series, Sly Cooper, here as well. Like that rascally raccoon, Jin Sakai can get a grappling hook partway through the game. It is more of a situational item—it can’t be used on any old tree branch and there aren’t nearly as many grapple hook points as there were in the last major game set in feudal Japan, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice—but it is a well-designed tool that is fun to use and can get Jin into hidden areas he otherwise wouldn’t be able to reach. This guide will cover how to get the grappling hook as quickly as possible.

How to get the grappling hook in Ghost of Tsushima

Players won’t be able to miss the grappling hook in Ghost of Tsushima—Jin will have to pick it up at some point in order to progress from Act I to Act II—but players can (and maybe should) make a bee-line for the tool as soon as they can. It can be awfully handy and gives Jin more options when it comes to traversal.

Jin will ultimately unlock the grappling hook after he completes the Iron Hook quest, but there are several quests he must complete first. Those are:

  1. The Warrior’s Code
  2. The Broken Blacksmith
  3. Hammer and Forge
  4. The Tale of Ryuzo

The short of it is that Jin will first have to recruit all the introductory allies in Izuhara. All these quests will be marked on the map with a golden mission icon. Complete these quests, set up the forge, and Yuna’s brother will be able to craft Jin the Iron Hook. The Iron Hook quest itself operates as a tutorial for the item, but it is rather straightforward to use: simply press R2 when in the air and close enough to a grapple hook point to use it.

After the grappling hook has been acquired, players can explore Izuhara even more thoroughly. Ultimately, it will have to be used to scale the walls at Castle Kaneda and progress the story. Until then, though, have some fun swinging around!
