If you’re tired of paying for premium subscription streaming services, then you could always just watch a ton of VHS content online for free. VHS might be considered a relic these days, and almost comical when actually handling a physical video tape, but the content is finding a new home online.

For those who remember, VHS was about the only way most people watched content at home that wasn’t broadcast live. It was also the primary way most people recorded (and re-recorded) live TV to watch later using their VCR player/recorder. However, VHS fell out of fashion with the advent of disc media – which has also since been relegated to the history vaults, thanks to streaming.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Internet Archive is a digital library that looks to provide free public access to digitized materials. A part of that goal is video content with the Internet Archive offering a section specifically labelled as The VHS Vault. This treasure trove provides access to a wide collection of VHS content, including movies, shows, and trailers. As Vice points out, over the past couple of months, the VHS uploads have intensified for some reason, resulting in a lot more content suddenly available to watch.

The VHS Vault Won’t Be For Everyone

While the general idea of accessing video content for free is going to appeal to a number of users, that’s not to say this service is going to be for everyone. For one thing, and in spite of the growing list of titles, the selection of content won’t suit all tastes. After all, any content that was available in VHS form is likely to be considered dated by some people today, and in that sense, all of the content on offer is dated. Likewise, for those who were never really part of the VHS era, then the videos are going to be of a lesser quality than what they are used to. While VHS was considered the best home quality at the time, that was a long time ago, and although all of the VHS vault content has been digitized, it hasn’t been remastered. Instead, this is VHS content made available online in its original VHS quality.

Of course, for those who do remember VHS and would like to be able to revisit that period of history, then this is going to be an actual treasure trove of content. The fact that it’s completely free to access just makes it all the better. To give you an idea of the type of content you can expect to stream for free, you could start off with Dragon Ball Z – Fusion: The Last Saiyan before moving on to every episode of Tales from the Darkside.
