Howard the Duck may be set to return to the MCU in Disney+’s She-Hulk. Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) will bring Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk to the MCU in the upcoming Disney+ series. The show will be led by showrunner Jessica Gao and will see Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth return as Hulk and Abomination. While a release date for She-Hulk has not been set, the series is expected to release ten episodes this year.

Once named as one of Marvel’s oddest characters, Howard the Duck was created by writer Steve Gerber and artist Val Mayerik in 1973. Lucasfilm and producer Gloria Katz brought the anthropomorphic duck trapped in a human world to the big screen in 1986, but the live-action Marvel comics adaptation was a disaster and is often considered one of the worst movies ever made. Still, Howard the Duck was introduced to the MCU in the Guardians of the Galaxy post-credits scene as a part of the Collector’s destroyed menagerie, and he makes quick cameo appearances in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and AvengersEndgame. Then, in a wild move true to his comic book origins, Howard the Duck (voiced by Seth Green) married Darcy Lewis in Disney+’s What If…? episode 7.

Now, there are reports that Howard the Duck will be returning to the MCU in live-action. An observant fan, @tuttiquantinoob, noticed Disney teasing Howard the Duck’s return in She-Hulk in Picsou Magazine, an officially licensed French magazine and reported the find on Twitter. Check out the magazine’s excerpt and its English translation below:

“A webbed future? Howard the Duck seems to be part of Marvel’s plans again: in the What If…? series, he got married to Darcy Lewis…Does the duck, elected in 2009 as one of the strangest characters in the Marvel team by “Time” magazine, have a promising bright future? In any case, the She-Hulk series, which lands this year on Disney +, could reserve some “what the duck” surprises! This should delight lovers of this turbulent duck, determined to do as he pleases.”

Despite Howard the Duck’s absurd premise, his appearance in She-Hulk would not be as random as it seems. Howard and Jennifer Walters have already appeared in crossovers together. In the 1980s, Howard the Duck appeared in Sensational She-Hulk #14, and since he frequently acts as a private detective in the comics, he and Jennifer cross paths during her law career. Adding to that, Endgame has already established the groundwork for Howard the Duck being on Earth with a quick cameo among the Ravagers. Although there’s no guarantee that Howard remained on Earth after the Avengers’ battle against Thanos’s army, this would also follow Howard’s classic comic tagline, “Trapped in a World He Never Made.”

So far, there hasn’t been any additional word about Howard the Duck’s return outside of this small excerpt, but considering the magazine is an official Disney license, it seems likely. Because She-Hulk will take a more typical comedic approach than other series in the franchise, it would also be the perfect vehicle to reintroduce Howard to the MCU without disrupting its tone. Without any further information on the grumpy duck’s return, fans can only hope to see Howard the Duck again soon.
