Hugh Jackman opens up about his photo with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige going viral and sparking debate over his potential return as Wolverine. The 52-year-old Australian actor rose to international stardom for his role as the adamantium-powered superhero in Fox’s X-Men franchise upon its launch in 2000. He would carry the role forward in the initial two sequels, X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand, the latter of which saw a more mixed reception and nearly brought the franchise to a close.

Jackman would return, however, to lead a solo film entitled X-Men Origins: Wolverine exploring the backstory of his character a little further. Much like the film prior, its generally negative reception from critics and audiences alike almost derailed the franchise’s future until Fox took the soft reboot approach with X-Men: First Class, focusing on the origins of Professor Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr, aka Magneto, amongst other characters. Having made a cameo in the 2011 film, Jackman would properly return for another solo film with The Wolverine, which saw far better reviews and box office numbers, and X-Men: Days of Future Past before eventually retiring the role with the Oscar-nominated Logan.

The Oscar nominee recently spoke with ComicBook.com to discuss his work in the upcoming sci-fi mystery thriller Reminiscence. As the conversation shifted to the photo of he and Feige sparking fan theories of the former’s return as the Wolverine for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jackman explained he didn’t realize posting the fan art and photo would go viral and had a sweeter intention behind sharing the image. See what Jackman said below:

“I literally was re-posting fan art and I do it quite a bit because I just love it. And I love the fans. And then I was off doing something and I came back and I’m like, ‘Oh, I think I broke the Internet. No, no, no, no. Guys, sorry. Didn’t mean that. I really didn’t mean that. I’m really sorry.’ And I thought, ‘No one’s going to believe me.’ But that was the case. And you guys are just too fast for me. Clearly way too fast and smarter than me. I just love the fans. And so, when cool things come my way, I’m going to pass it on.”

As disappointing as Jackman’s recent confirmation was that he will not be appearing in the MCU as Wolverine, the actor’s intentions behind sharing the photo of he and Feige are indeed rather sweet. With some blockbuster franchises and their fan bases eventually taking their toll on some stars, it’s very encouraging for those who have been with Jackman’s Wolverine for 20 years that he is still just as in love with the character and his fans as they are with him. Even if this dedication does occasionally lead to sending the internet into a fervor regarding his potential reprisal of the beloved character.

Though Jackman may not be returning as Wolverine for the MCU, fans can at least look forward to Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool making his way from Fox to the House of Mouse. With Feige already having confirmed that Deadpool 3 will remain R-rated and the star himself recently praising the writing of Bob’s Burgers alums the Molyneux sisters, his transition is sure to be an effective one. With any luck, Reynolds will find a way to poke fun at Jackman declining an MCU Wolverine appearance in the film to the same level of hilarity as the first two films.
