A new piece of fan art imagines what it would have looked like if Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine suited up to time travel in Avengers: Endgame. Jackman portrayed the character in seven X-Men films, and appeared in two others in uncredited cameos, making him one of the most prolific superhero actors of all time. His last appearance as Wolverine was in 2017’s critically acclaimed Logan, which sees the character finally die at the film’s conclusion. Jackman officially retired from the role following that movie.

Despite being part of the Marvel Universe in the comics, the X-Men and the Avengers haven’t crossed paths on-screen thanks to the rights to the characters sitting at different studios until Disney bought Fox last year, meaning the X-Men will be able to appear in the MCU in the future. That resulted in there being no chance of Wolverine appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe while Jackman was in the role, even though he said he would have loved to team up with the Avengers on-screen.

But now, a new piece of fan art from Instagram user gaben.art imagines what it would have looked like if Jackman’s Wolverine was part of the MCU. The digital artist has sketched a modded vision of the older bearded Wolverine seen in Logan and put him in one of the distinctive red and white time travel suits worn by the Avengers in Endgame. You can see the result below.

Portrait Study 41: Here’s a concept art. I did not actually intend to draw this guy. My old man sketch kinda resembled him so why not?? 3.5hours total. Pretty wild timelapse though. I was just winging it up to the last minute. . #procreateart #procreatedrawing #sketch_daily #sketch_dailydose #ipadproart #oneweekportrait #siningph #artistsoninstagram #gabenart #guhitpinas #conceptart #marvelcomics #marvelfanart #wolverine #hughjackman #marvelstudiosphase4 #guhitpinasartist

Avengers: Endgame’s time travel plot was one of the most entertaining, but divisive, aspects of the movie, and the suits were a standout feature. As revealed last year, the suits were actually CGI, as they hadn’t been designed by the time the blockbuster started shooting, but the final design was eye-catching and distinctive. And Wolverine certainly suits the look.

The fan art is not only really well done, but presents a scenario that should get the blood of any Marvel fan pumping. Many have speculated what role the X-Men could have played in the MCU in the past, and in particular how a grumpy, sardonic character like Jackman’s Wolverine would have fit in to the universe. The prospect of Jackman’s Wolverine trading barbs with the likes of Robert Downey Jr.s’ Tony Stark is an exciting one, but alas it was not to be as both actors retired from their roles before the Disney acquired the X-Men character rights.

However, there is always the very good chance that Wolverine will still appear in the MCU. The enduring popularity of the character means that he is sure to be recast by Kevin Feige, the Marvel Studios head honcho, and fans will finally be able to see the character alongside other favorites from the Marvel Universe even if he wasn’t in Avengers: Endgame.
