The Huntress is one of Gotham City’s most lethal vigilantes, and in the forthcoming Detective Comics #1035 she finds herself investigating a particularly gruesome murder and it could have serious consequences for her.

There have been two versions of The Huntress through the years: the first was Helena Wayne, daughter of the Golden Age Batman and Catwoman who first appeared in 1977’s DC Super Stars #17; the second, and arguably more popular version is Helena Bertinelli, the daughter of a mafioso who becomes a vigilante – although, both characters had the same costume design and gimmick. The character has been a solid addition to the Batman mythos and has proven popular beyond the comics: she appeared frequently in various DC animated projects including Justice League Unlimited. The Huntress has made the leap to live-action, appearing in both Arrow, played by actress Jessica De Guow and in the feature film Birds of Prey, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The Huntress will be receiving her own back-up feature each month in Detective Comics, and the first arc kicks off when she investigates the murder of an old friend.

In a press release from DC Comics, it was revealed that writer Mariko Tamaki (who will also be writing Detective’s main feature) will join artist Clayton Henry to chronicle the Huntress’ new adventures. The press release offered a few tantalizing details: while investigating the gruesome death of a friend, the Huntress stumbles across something much deeper; the release did not say what she would discover, but that it would have “big implications” for her future.

What exactly those ramifications are remains to be seen, but in the recently-concluded Future State event, the Huntress was seen still working in Gotham, only she had been driven underground by the anti-vigilante Magistrate; in this timeline she had become a criminal, smuggling people and goods in and out of Gotham. Could whatever it is she discovers here start her down that dark path? It is also worth noting that the New 52 introduced another wrinkle into the character: Bertinelli had once been an agent of SPYRAL, one of the DC Universe’s premier spy organizations before becoming the Huntress. Could her friend’s death be tied to her time with that agency?

The Huntress is one of the most fascinating members of the Batman-Family, and it’s great to see DC is shining the spotlight on her once again in Detective Comics #1035. The issue will be available in print and digital on April 27.
