WARNING: Spoilers for iCarly season 2, episode 1.

iCarly season 2 continues to echo elements from the original show, including its longest-running love-story plot line. Just over a year after audiences rediscovered their favorite characters now as adults, the iCarly revival is back for season 2. As in season 1, iCarly’s core characters reunite for the Paramount+ series, the only exception being Jennette McCurdy’s Sam.

With the same style of humor from the original show but now reimagined for a grownup audience, the iCarly revival saw Carly returning to the Bushwell Plaza now with a new roommate, Harper. iCarly season 2 continues to show the new challenges an influencer has to face in this era of social media, which are very different from when Carly’s first started her web show. Despite the changes in the world, some very old dramas continue to be part of iCarly.

iCarly season 2’s premiere brought the relationship between Freddie and Carly, a storyline that iCarly has been developing since the beginning of the original show, back into the spotlight. Friends and co-workers for a long time, Carly and Freddie have always seemed close to becoming a couple. However, it wasn’t until the end of the original series that the couple known as “Creddie”, a name given by the show itself, really revealed their feelings. After iCarly’s revival season 1 revealed that Carly and Freddie had remained friends only, it looked like the matter had finally been resolved. However, iCarly season 2 is showing that this is not quite the case. Carly and Freddie once again discussed their feelings for each other, and while it was all meant to be an internet fakeout, one of iCarly‘s most famous couples came back – at least, for a few minutes.

The “will-they-won’t-they” element seen in the iCarly revival has been part of the relationship between Freddie and Carly since the beginning of iCarly. Although Freddie also bonded with Sam, iCarly’s season 6 ending indicated that it was Carly he really liked. Although the original series hinted that Freddie and Carly would be together once she returned from her trip to Italy, the revival chose to establish that this never occurred. Even after returning to the United States, Carly remained Freddie’s friend only. That said, iCarly season 1 placed a few hints here and there that the two still had feelings for each other, and iCarly’s season 2 premiere was entirely focused on Creddie and their in-universe audience, which can be interpreted as a meta-commentary on viewers of the show and the couple. Although Carly and Freddie’s moments in the episode were played out as jokes, iCarly season 2 already set up what could be a new beginning for their relationship.

While iCarly season 2, episode 1 was a strong and funny start to the new season, the episode suggests that iCarly may run the risk of over-extending a plot line that has been heavily used since the original series. The “will-they-won’t-they” trope always worked well in the context of the show, but after six seasons of the original run and already two into the revival, it may be the time for iCarly to finally settle the Creddie matter. It remains to be seen if iCarly season 2 will provide a definitive answer to the relationship between Freddie and Carly, or if the old dynamic between the two will continue for longer.

Paramount+ releases new episodes of iCarly every Friday.
