Secret powers come in different shapes and sizes, but one of the most hilarious abilities comes courtesy of original X-Men hero Iceman. Bobby Drake once showed an all-new power that proved all too sweet – as he managed to make ice cream during one of his earliest appearances.

Iceman was part of the X-Men’s first team alongside Marvel Girl, Beast, Cyclops, and Angel in The X-Men #1 (1963) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The mutant has the ability to take an ice form while being able to manipulate the cold and ice at a whim. The Omega level mutant was also given the ability to make ice cream – as one of Drake’s first appearances features him making a dessert on the fly.

The X-Men #6 opens with the team eating dinner cooked by Jean Grey at the Xavier Institute. While everyone is distracted, Bobby decides to use his ice powers to make “pie a la mode.” He uses his abilities to make edible ice cream to top off the pie. When he tries to take a bite without a knife or fork, Jean levitates the pie in the air and tells him about Professor X’s feelings on table manners.

Unsurprisingly, Iceman’s ice cream making abilities weren’t a power that would be revisited any time soon. While it might fit perfectly into the sillier era of the X-Men, when you think a little harder about it, it doesn’t make a lick of sense that Bobby has the ability to make ice cream with his powers. First of all, ice cream isn’t just made from ice – and it’s not just ice that Bobby put on his pie – as he states that it’s in fact, ice cream. The desert is made up from a number of ingredients including milk and sugar, did he add those on top of his pie first?

Ultimately, it’s best to take the moment as a product of its time. Powers and abilities weren’t fully defined, so what really stopped Lee from making Iceman create ice cream from his fingertips? He could make Iceman do whatever he wanted and it would have been perfectly fine. Iceman might have never used to the ice cream powers again, but for a moment, he had the ability to make a dessert whenever he wanted – a dangerous (in the best way), yet very sweet power.
