Prior to becoming a household name due to Hamilton‘s success on Broadway and later release on Disney+, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first successful musical came with In the Heights. He developed the show during college, debuted it on Broadway in the mid-2000s, and then began developing a movie adaptation with Warner Bros. in 2018.

The story of In the Heights primarily follows Usnavi de la Vega in New York City’s Washington Heights. Led by Anthony Ramos as Usnavi and his dreams of building a better life for himself, the movie also features Vanessa (Melissa Barrera), Nina Rosario (Leslie Grace), and Benny (Corey Hawkins). The musical was originally scheduled to be released in theaters in 2020 but Warner Bros. had to delay it to 2021 due to COVID-19. In the Heights then became one of many movies to receive a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max.

The ending of the story leaves the door open for Usnavi’s journey to continue after some major life decisions, and the same is true for Vanessa, Nina, and Benny. A sequel can further explore life in Washington Heights and the main characters’ different paths to pursuing their dreams. In the Heights 2 could pick up directly after the first film or continue the story several years later, and that decision will be up to Miranda and his writing partner Quiara Alegría Hudes.
