A handful of expertly captured screenshots from Marvel’s Spider-Man were so impressive that Insomniac Games itself recognized them on Twitter. The images were taken via Spider-Man‘s robust and user-friendly Photo Mode– a feature that is becoming more and more of a staple in gaming, appearing in other AAA titles like Ghost of Tsushima and the recent Horizon Forbidden West.

Although it was released almost four years ago, 2018’s Spider-Man remains a technical and visual marvel for many gamers. The best-selling PS4 game follows the story of none other than Peter Parker himself as he navigates love, life, and the various trials and tribulations that stem from being bitten by a radioactive spider. Throughout his journey, Spider-Man is faced with plenty of challenges posed by classic series villains like Doctor Octopus and Electro, and he can take them down in spectacular fashion thanks to the game’s Arkham-inspired combat system. Whether players are taking down menacing antagonists or simply swinging through New York City, they can customize their experience by donning a number of different iconic suits. The list of suits available to the player has been expanded multiple times since launch, with the most recent additions coming straight out of the Spider-Man: No Way Home film.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Leveraging the game’s Photo Mode and experimenting with the different suits has yielded great results for Twitter user tarnished vincent, who shared a series of in-game screenshots that was subsequently picked up by the official Insomniac Games Twitter account. The images depict Spider-Man fighting Doc Ock on a rainy rooftop, soaring through the sky dressed in the recently added Amazing Suit, walking through a darkened street, and shooting an incredibly detailed web directly at the virtual camera. The Spider-Man developer clearly appreciates tarnished vincent’s work, adding the statement “These are just stunning!” to its retweet.

Photos like the ones shared by tarnished vincent are truly remarkable and a testament to just how far video game visuals have come over the years. Sony often appears to be at the forefront of this technological advancement, publishing titles like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and The Last of Us Part II that constantly raise the bar when it comes to fidelity, animation, and art design. It is indeed quite telling that many gamers are happy to spend large chunks of time simply taking screenshots of these games and posting them online.

It’s hard not to appreciate the incredible level of detail present in so many modern AAA games. Even for those who don’t like titles like Spider-Man or simply disavow mainstream gaming altogether, the visual and aesthetic complexity of these virtual worlds cannot be denied. Gamers will have to wait and see what’s on the horizon when it comes to big-budget games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, but it is probable that developers like Insomniac Games will be a big part of pushing the industry forward.
