Indiana Jones5 is coming back for a new adventure with the aging archaeologist and here are all of the actors who are confirmed to star in the sequel’s cast. Beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, adventurer Indiana Jones takes audiences back to the 1930s to find valuable artifacts with life-or-death action sequences along the way, a premise that continued with the dashing Indy in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1983), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), the polarizing Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), and will likely extend into the new movie.

The unnamed Indiana Jones 5 has begun filming already with a setback or two of reported injuries on set, but it hasn’t slowed audiences’ anticipation for the next installment of the 40-year-long franchise. Set photos of the new movie’s on-site filming locations have spoiled certain character backgrounds and the timeline of Indiana Jones 5, though the actual premise has yet to be officially released. Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released in 2022 with Logan director James Mangold taking over for Steven Spielberg.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Indiana Jones franchise typically has a revolving cast around Harrison Ford in its movies, rarely bringing back characters and their actors with a few exceptions. As production on the fifth movie continues, more and more fresh faces to the franchise are being added. Here is every actor that has so far been confirmed for Indiana Jones 5’s cast.

Harrison Ford

After 40 years of portraying the cynical, romantic, hardboiled adventurer, Harrison Ford is returning for what may be his last time putting on the fedora, satchel, and bullwhip for the big screen. Ford has appeared as the main protagonist in each installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, a role he landed shortly after The Empire Strikes Back. It’s so far unknown what catastrophes Indiana Jones will be up against in the plot or who his foes will be, but if history repeats itself, Indy will hopefully make it out unscathed. While it has already been leaked that Indiana Jones 5 will use de-aging on Ford for flashback scenes, the 78-year-old actor has already injured his shoulder working on set, something that isn’t as easy to recover from as when he herniated a disc in his back during Temple of Doom.

While Indy and long-time off-and-on girlfriend Marion Ravenwood officially got married after reuniting with their son Mutt in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, neither Karen Allen nor Shia LaBeouf has been confirmed to return. Allen may return in a cameo, but the lack of an official announcement suggests she won’t have a primary role with Indy in his new adventure.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge

The Fleabag actress was one of the first names after Harrison Ford to be announced as joining the Indiana Jones 5 cast. The sequel will be Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s second Lucasfilm project after her voice role as L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Waller-Bridge’s Indiana Jones character is still undisclosed, though some have speculated her to be Indy’s new sidekick in his adventure. Disney’s CEO has already clarified that while a proper Indiana Jones revival will not follow the fifth installment, there will definitely be some kind of reboot, which many deduced to mean Waller-Bridge will become the new face of the franchise. If Indiana Jones 5 situates Waller-Bridge as Indy’s sidekick, a successful movie would mean a smooth transition into handing over the lead-adventurer baton.

Mads Mikkelsen

The Danish actor who made headlines in 2021 for his BAFTA-nominated performance in Another Round is confirmed to star opposite Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones 5. Mads Mikkelsen’s role hasn’t been revealed by the production, but if his prior acting credits are any indication, he may portray the villain in Indy’s new adventure. Mikkelsen is notable for primary antagonistic, criminal roles such as the serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal, Kaecilius in Doctor Strange, and Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, but Lucasfilm recently saw a more sympathetic side to his persona with his complicated role as protagonist Jyn Erso’s father, Galen, in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Whatever role Mikkelsen takes on in Indiana Jones 5, he’s sure to be a captivating presence alongside Ford and Waller-Bridge.

Antonio Banderas

The most recent big-name addition to the Indiana Jones 5 cast is Antonio Banderas, another aging actor who is no stranger to action and adventure roles. Banderas’s most recent acting credit is in the action-comedy movie The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard opposite recurring collaborator Selma Hayek, a good warm-up for whatever taxing role he will take on with Indiana Jones. It’s possible Banderas will show up as one of Indy’s old acquaintances, a menacing foe, or a new colleague met along the adventure.

Boyd Holbrook

Narcos’ own DEA agent Steve Murphy, Boyd Holbrook has also signed on to star in the fifth Indiana Jones movie. Holbrook has previously been featured in thrillers and action films like Gone Girl and The Predator, though his most significant qualification for Indiana Jones 5 comes from his prior collaboration with director James Mangold in Logan as Donald Pierce. As one of the younger additions to the cast, it’s so far unknown how Holbrook will fit into the plot. Since Shia LaBeouf has been the subject of an abundance of controversies and legal issues since Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and especially the past few years, Holbrook is around the right age that he may be playing an older version of Mutt.

Shaunette Reneé Wilson

Breaking out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe into another Disney-owned franchise, Shaunette Reneé Wilson will be joining the Indiana Jones 5 cast in an undisclosed role. Wilson only has six acting credits so far, though one is a significant preceding role as one of the Dora Milaje warriors in Black Pantherwhich likely contributed to her action-adventure qualifications. Since Black Panther, Wilson has mostly spent time in television with a small part on Billions and a four-season main role on The Resident. As she reenters the big screen, Wilson will trade in the foes of vibranium arms dealers for whatever faces Indiana Jones’ crew.

Toby Jones

No stranger to some of the biggest franchises to ever grace the big screen, Toby Jones will now add Indiana Jones to his filmography. Jones’ prior credits include Dobby the House Elf in Harry Potter, Claudius in Hunger Games, Arnim Zola in the MCU, and Mr. Eversoll in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Set photos from Indiana Jones 5 suggest that Jones will be portraying one of Indy’s sidekicks or assistants in the new movie.

Thomas Kretschmann

Like any Indy fan knows, it’s not Indiana Jones without the presence of Germans or Nazis. Since the last time fans saw Indy was in 1957, over a decade after the fall of the Nazi regime, it was assumed The Last Crusade was the final instance of a Nazi foe for the adventurer. Nonetheless, notable German actor Thomas Kretschmann being cast makes one immediately deduce Indy’s World War II enemies are back. While Kretschmann’s role hasn’t been confirmed, his prior acting credits as a villain, even sometimes a Nazi, in movies like Stalingrad, The Pianist, and Baron Wolfgang von Strucker in the MCU’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron all point to a possible Nazi presence in Indiana Jones 5.
