The first Indiana Jones 5 footage was screened during the D23 Expo. Disney and Lucasfilm first announced their intention to make the film back in 2016, with longtime franchise director Steven Spielberg back at the helm. After that, Indiana Jones 5 encountered a number of behind-the-scenes issues, as several writers took a pass at the script, and James Mangold replaced Spielberg as director. Eventually, Indiana Jones 5 moved forward with Harrison Ford headlining a cast that includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Antonio Banderas, and more. The film is set for release in June 2023.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

During Indiana Jones 5 production, audiences got a taste of what’s in store via set photos. Some of those images hinted at flashback sequences with a younger Indiana Jones, as Ford was seen wearing motion-capture dots on his face (presumeably for digital de-aging effects). This all raised intriguing questions about the Indiana Jones 5 story. Official marketing isn’t underway just yet, but some footage has been screened.

During the D23 Expo, Lucasfilm showed the first Indiana Jones 5 footage to attendees. The sizzle reel started with Ford saying, “those days have come and gone,” alluding to the character’s older age as he gets roped in for another adventure. There was a montage of clips from the previous Indiana Jones movies, followed by a shot of Indy racing off on a horse. The footage also showed Holbrook’s character firing a gun into the sky. It ended with an entire room of villains shooting at Indiana after he attempted to crack his whip.

Though Mangold is at the helm, Indiana Jones 5 is said to be reminiscent of Spielberg, capturing the feel of the original movies. While the D23 Expo footage was brief, it hinted the creative team strived to stay true to the classic Indiana Jones tone audiences have come to love. The final action bit in particular sounds like something that would be right at home in one of Spielberg’s installments, with Dr. Jones forced to make the best of a sticky situation. Holbrook previously stated Indiana Jones 5 also sports plenty of the emotion synonymous with Mangold’s best works, so it will be interesting to see how his style blends with what Spielberg established in his films. Considering Indiana Jones 5 could be Ford’s final movie, it will hopefully send the character and actor off on a high note.

Indiana Jones 5 had a nice presence at the D23 Expo, as there were also costumes and concept art on display on the show floor. With Lucasfilm taking the time to debut footage, it indicates soon they’ll look to kickstart the official marketing campaign with a theatrical trailer. Perhaps one will release later in the year, attached to Disney tentpoles Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water. Once a full Indiana Jones 5 trailer makes its way online, the general public will be able to judge for themselves how Mangold was able to bring the hero back for another round.
