Warning: SPOILERS for Infinite.

When will Infinite 2 release, and what will the story be about? Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Infinite is a sci-fi action fantasy about extraordinary humans who are gifted with the power of reincarnation. Divided into two warring factions, the Believers and the Nihilists, the Infinites have battled for thousands of years and have lived numerous lives. Infinite streams exclusively starting June 10, 2021, on Paramount+.

In Infinite, Mark Wahlberg stars as Evan McCauley, a diagnosed schizophreniac plagued by visions of Evan’s past lives and who somehow mastered skills he has no memory of learning. When Evan meets Nora Brightman (Sophie Cookson), he learns that they are both Infinites. But Evan is targeted by the villainous Bathurst (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who wants to wipe out the human race to end what he believes is the curse of reincarnation. Evan has to retrain his body and mind to unlock a buried secret that will determine the world’s survival.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While Infinite is a self-contained story, its sci-fi concept is also primed to be expanded into a franchise that could span history, like The Old Guard and Highlander. However, more Infinite movies aren’t a given, and everything depends on how it performs with audiences and other factors given its release strategy. Here is everything to know about Infinite 2.

Infinite 2 Release Date Info

There are currently no known plans for an Infinite sequel. Whether or not Infinite 2 gets made will depend on how the film is received on Paramount+ and what metrics the studio will use to determine its success. Infinite was originally scheduled for an ordinary theatrical release on August 7, 2020, before those plans were scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic-related shutdowns. Paramount then canceled its theatrical release altogether, resulting in Infinite being moved to stream exclusively on Paramount+ as an incentive to subscribe to ViacomCBS’s streaming service.

As a big-budget sci-fi action blockbuster led by an A-list star and director in Mark Wahlberg and Antoine Fuqua, Infinite will be an interesting test case for Paramount+. But if it posts big numbers on the streaming service, Infinite 2 will likely get a green light, although a sequel wouldn’t be completed until 2023 at the earliest.

Infinite 2 Story Details

While the world of Infinite is primed for further exploration in a sequel, the very nature of the concept and the way the movie ended likely means Wahlberg and most of the cast won’t be involved in Infinite 2. Reincarnation is the main subject matter of Fuqua’s movie, and the film concluded with the two main Infinite protagonists, Evan McCauley and Nora Brightman, reincarnated as younger Asian people. In addition, Evan ensured that Bathurst wouldn’t reincarnate, so he can’t return to try to wipe out the world once again.

Making Infinite 2 a prequel also wouldn’t work since Evan only learned about the Infinites in this film. Based on the rules Infinite established, it would take a lot of creative chicaneries for Mark Wahlberg to reprise his starring role in Infinite 2. However, it’s not entirely out of the question since it’s sci-fi and anything is possible. More likely, Infinite 2 could star a new cast playing the reincarnated characters set in the future, or it could be about an entirely different group of Infinites set in the same world. Whether Antoine Fuqua would return to direct Infinite 2 is also not known at the present time.
