Here’s a guide to every song on the soundtrack for Inside Llewyn Davis. The Coen Brothers made their directorial debut back in 1984 with low-budget noir Blood Simple, which featured both great performances and their trademark black humor. The duo would go on to produce some of the best American movies of the last four decades, including Raising ArizonaThe Big Lebowski and No Country For Old Men.

While they’ve produced occasional misfires such as the Tom Hanks fronted remake of The Ladykillers, their track record for producing classics is fairly astounding. The forthcoming The Tragedy Of Macbeth will mark the first time the brothers haven’t worked on a movie together, with the project being a solo effort for Joel Coen. The movie is based on Shakespeare’s play, with Denzel Washington playing the title role while Francis McDormand plays Lady Macbeth; a release date has yet to be confirmed.

Inside Llewyn Davis is the Coens’ 2013 dark comedy that provided Oscar Isaac with a breakthrough role. Davis is a talented folk singer but his own ego and general lack of empathy see his personal and professional life being something of a disaster. The movie received critical acclaim, as did the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack. The album is made up of classic 1960s folk songs in addition to new tracks created for the movie, and here’s a guide to every song.

  • Hang Me, Oh Hang Me – Oscar Isaac
  • Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song) – Oscar Isaac & Marcus Mumford
  • The Last Thing On My Mind – Stark Sands with Punch Brothers
  • Five Hundred Miles – Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan & Stark Sands
  • Please Mr. Kennedy – Justin Timberlake, Oscar Isaac & Adam Driver
  • Green, Green Rocky Road – Oscar Isaac
  • The Death Of Queen Jane – Oscar Isaac
  • The Roving Gambler – The Down Hill Strugglers with John Cohen
  • The Shoals Of Herring – Oscar Isaac with Punch Brothers
  • The Auld Triangle – Chris Thile, Chris Eldridge, Marcus Mumford, Justin Timberlake & Gabe Witcher
  • The Storms Are On the Ocean – Nancy Blake
  • Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song) – Oscar Isaac
  • Farewell (Unreleased Studio Version) – Bob Dylan
  • Green, Green Rocky Road -Dave Van Ronk

Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack was produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, and like the titular character himself, the music drew inspiration from real-life folk singer Dave Van Ronk. In fact, the film’s title is derived from Von Ronk’s album Inside Dave Van Ronk, and Llewyn is a frequent performer in Greenwich Village’s The Gaslight Cafe, as was Von Ronk. The cast performed most of the songs themselves, with Isaac performing Von Rolk’s own “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me” and “Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song)” in collaboration with Marcus Mumford as the voice of Davis’ late singing partner.

It’s only fitting Dave Von Ronk himself makes an appearance, with the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack ending on “Green, Green Rocky Road,” with Isaac also singing a cover in the movie. Von Rook was an inspiration on a young Bob Dylan too as he was becoming a musician of note in the Greenwich Village scene, with Dylan’s song “Farewell” also featuring on the soundtrack. The hilarious “Please Mr. Kennedy” – a novelty song Davis very reluctantly takes part in because he needs the cash – is performed by Isaac, Justin Timberlake and Adam Driver, with T Bone Burnett taking inspiration from 1960s-era protest ballads like “Please Mr. Kennedy (I Don’t Want to Go)” by The Goldcoast Singers.
