Apple‘s iOS 14.5 update brings over 200 new emojis to the table, with a huge emphasis on inclusivity. Aside from new hearts and smileys, the upcoming batch of emoji also better reflect current events and provide Apple with an opportunity to promote some of its own product branding. When last year’s iOS 14.2 update arrived, it brought with it access to over 100 new emojis for iPhone users.

The latest iOS 14.5 version will be doubling those figures with the new set based on Unicode’s Emoji 13.1 update. This includes some noteworthy additions, such as a new Heart on Fire, Mending Heart and Face in Clouds emoji, to name a few. While the new emojis previously came with a proposed universal design, the iOS 14.5 iterations are going to look somewhat different from what was shown months ago.

In a blog post, Emojipedia confirmed there’s going to be a total of 217 new emojis included in the latest iOS 14.5 release. A significant bulk of the new batch consists of inclusive couple emojis, including around 200 varying skin tones and gender pairings. The latest update also comes with the three new smileys, two new heart emojis and a number of gender-neutral facial hair options, all of which have received a distinct redesign to fit the iOS mold. The Exhaling Face, Face in Clouds and Heart on Fire emojis, have revamped designs that separate them from their Unicode interpretations, while the more refined-looking Mending Heart and Face with Spiral Eyes emojis have a wealth of potential applications in casual conversations and posts.

iOS 14.5 Emoji Changes & When To Expect The Update

Besides the expected map optimizations, a face mask fix for Face ID, and the new emojis, the iOS 14.5 update is going to change a couple of older emojis as well. The syringe emoji is getting a more child-friendly facelift, by omitting the blood droplets of the previous design and shortening the needle point to make it look less ominous. This also makes it more appropriate when used in relation to the COVID-19 vaccination. Likewise, the generic black headphones emoji is being replaced with one that looks far more similar to Apple’s AirPods Max.

The iOS 14.5 beta is only available to developers at the moment, so everyone else will need to wait for the official release that’s due to roll out some time in the spring. It hasn’t been that long since the incremental iOS 14.4 update was released, along with the various key features and fixes that came with it, and Apple may not be in a hurry to release the iOS 14.5 version. However, Apple ecosystem users looking to take advantage of everything iOS 14.5 has to offer, including the new emojis, probably won’t have to wait much longer than a month or two.
