Apple releases new iPhone models every year and 2020 has been no different with the iPhone SE launching earlier in the year. Although, one difference this year is the staggered iPhone release schedule with the iPhone 12 expected to be announced soon and with several models. The iPhone SE is simply an update to Apple’s budget category, but the iPhone 12 is where Apple will showcase its latest innovations.

The iPhone SE costs $400 and, at first glance, looks like an iPhone released in 2016. Its iconic aluminum and glass design is cost-saving for Apple because previous-generation iPhone devices use the same casing. The iPhone SE is not for users who want the latest and greatest, rather it is for individuals seeking a cheaper iPhone experience and those who don’t mind sacrificing some “high-end” features, such as a bezel-less screen and multiple cameras.

The iPhone 7 was actually released in 2016 and its design was the iPhone’s standard before Apple went completely bezel-less. While newer, the iPhone SE follows the same design in general. For example, both devices feature a 4.7-inch Retina HD display, a 12-megapixel rear camera and Touch ID. Given the similar appearance, people may think that Apple is pulling a cash grab by re-releasing an older iPhone, but it is inside where the iPhone SE improvements can really be seen.

It’s Inside The iPhone That Matter

There are three major differences between the iPhone 7 and iPhone SE; processor, storage, and camera. The iPhone 7 has the A10 Fusion chip while the iPhone SE includes the latest A13 Bionic chip. The multi-generational gap between the two processors is massive as the speed and multi-core performance of the A13 Bionic is leaps ahead of the A10 Fusion. Apple does not state the battery capacity of any iPhone, but the iPhone SE supports wireless charging and the A13 Bionic is better at conserving energy, which typically means longer battery life.

In terms of the storage, the iPhone SE starts at 64GB and this compares to the iPhone 7’s 32GB starting point. Finally, the front and rear cameras of the iPhone SE features Apple’s latest Smart HDR and advanced settings for portrait photos. Capturing videos on the iPhone SE is also better than on the iPhone 7, as it includes 4K video recording at up to 60 fps (compared to iPhone 7’s 4K at 30 fps), as well as the ability to record slow-motion videos in 1080p at 240 fps (compared to iPhone 7’s 1080p at 120 fps).

The only advantage of the iPhone 7 is the addition of a headphone jack. However, the iPhone SE comes with EarPods with a Lightning connector. Furthermore, the prices for wireless earbuds have continued to drop over the years. It is important to note that Apple discontinued the iPhone 7 in 2019 and while the device can still be purchased through resellers, any sold now are likely to be refurbished models. In contrast, purchasing the iPhone SE guarantees the latest internal specifications and years of software updates from Apple.
