In 2019’s History of the Marvel Universe, writer Mark Waid and artist Javier Rodriguez included a number of clues to future Marvel stories, including the wedding of Iron Man and Emma Frost. Of all the hypothetical situations described, this struck fans as the most unusual. Tony Stark revealed a long-ago romantic connection to Emma Frost in Marvel’s first Civil War event, but the two have had minimal interaction ever since, and Frost isn’t someone likely to be charmed by Stark’s playboy antics in future.

The prediction hasn’t shown any signs of coming true, even as events mentioned alongside it like the King in Black’s invasion and the Age of Khonshu have. Emma Frost recently interacted with some of the Avengers, including Tony Stark, in X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #2 by Leah Williams and Lucas Werneck, but even there she completely ignored Tony Stark when he approached her. Tony harnessed some of his flirtatious charisma, but it failed to impress Emma at all, again leaving fans nonplussed about how their marriage would ever come to be.

Now, while being interview by Comic Book Herald about the soon to be released History of Science Fiction, Mark Waid has spoken about the marriage of Tony and Emma, revealing that it’s the one event that wasn’t based on upcoming stories or seeding a specific narrative. “That was the one that was the complete, utter, I’m just gonna throw this wrench in and just see if anything ever comes of it. That was the one that had no connection to anything that just felt like, alright, let’s just throw it in to mix things up…” Waid says. It’s a reveal that’s exactly what fans feared, and yet the writer follows it up with an intriguing promise. “So we’ll see. Somebody will marry off Tony Stark and Emma Frost. If nothing else, I’ll do it if I have to.”

One of the joys of a continuous, interconnected universe is that ideas like this wedding can lie dormant for literal decades before being brought back to life, and while it’s clear there are no current plans, it’s likewise apparent that Waid understands fans aren’t going to forget this idea. Superhero weddings haven’t exactly delivered in recent years. While some successful marriages have occurred (like the one between Rogue and Gambit), Kitty Pryde/Colossus and Catwoman/Batman both ended in tragedy. The question therefore isn’t whether Tony Stark and Emma Frost will end up with their own happily ever after, but how the two deeply incompatible heroes could possibly believe married life will work, and just how big the explosion will be when a relationship between a volatile genius and a ruthless former supervillain inevitably goes wrong.

For those fans who can’t wait to see the fireworks, Mark Waid’s comments are a blessing and a curse, confirming that the wedding of Iron Man and Emma Frost isn’t planned anytime soon, but guaranteeing that if no other writer decides to have fun with this idea, he’ll handle it himself.
