Iron Man frequently upgrades his suits in an effort to always be ahead of the next villain he may face, and his latest comes in the form of a symbiote. While Tony Stark does not bond with a member of the Klyntar race like Eddie Brock and Venom, he certainly uses the alien’s powers to give his suit a major boost. The events of King in Black have been nothing short of tragic with Knull acting as one of the greatest threats the Earth has ever seen, but through the destruction caused in the god-king’s wake fans may have been given Stark’s most powerful suit to date.

In King in Black #2 by Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, Frank Martin, and JP Mayer, Spider-Man recovers the body of Eddie Brock after Knull stripped him of his symbiote and threw him off of a building during the events of King in Black #1. After Spider-Man finds Brock he takes him back to a secure location where the remaining heroes who survived Knull’s attack were currently in hiding, and among the survivors was Tony Stark. Stark and his fellow heroes decide that their best chance at defeating Knull and his army of symbiote-possessed superheroes was to re-merge Brock with a symbiote so he could infiltrate Knull’s hive mind, potentially giving them an upper hand against the King in Black. Iron Man goes up against a Grendel, or Klyntar-dragon, to try to steal its symbiote to give to Brock. While Iron Man is successful in his mission, during the battle with the beast a piece of Stark’s technology caused a unique bond between himself and one of the deadly alien invaders.

While fighting one of Knull’s dragons, Tony created a new version of his Extremis armor which combined his technology with a symbiote. Iron Man’s combined Extremis tech and the newfound symbiote gave Stark a Venom-ized upgrade. The usual bonding method of human and symbiote is purely biological with the symbiote bonding to a person’s body and embedding its consciousness within the brain of its host. In Iron Man’s case, his Extremis armor protected him while also bonding with the alien, leaving Stark’s body protected while granting him all of the super-powered benefits of a symbiote.

Fans have yet to see the full extent of Iron Man’s new symbiote armor in terms of its power level other than witnessing Iron Man using the suit while teaming up with Doctor Doom to save Santa Claus in Iron Man Doctor Doom #1 by Christopher Cantwell.

While the Klyntar armor showed its effectiveness in saving the life of Jolly Saint Nick, fans haven’t seen Iron Man use the new suit to face off against the entity responsible for the suit’s existence. While Iron Man got a symbiote upgrade courtesy of Knull, it is at this time unclear if that upgrade will prove useful to Earth and its heroes in their battle against the King in Black.
