The wildly-popular Among Us began life in obscurity and exploded into fame over the course of several months. Partially being attributed to the pandemic, players began flocking to the game late last summer when lockdown restrictions started to roll out. Among Us’ gameplay is simple and the concept is fun. InnerSloth’s Among Us has an Impostor (or multiple Impostoprs) amongst a group of players, who attempts to get away with killing their other Crewmates without getting caught. Among Us has enjoyed time in the spotlight, but has the moment passed to the point of no return?

According to steamcharts.com, the game hit a peak last October at approximately 176k average players. It also set a record on Steam with a 438.5k peak player count back in September 2020, giving it the #8 spot. While this is all quite impressive for a free mobile game such as Among Us, there’s been fall-off, lately, that may lead some to believe that the game is now dead.

Pulling Among Us up on Twitchtracker.com tells a similar story to Steam charts – a peak right around the September/October of 2020 area with a steady decline – but it also shows a fairly consistent levelling off with decently strong numbers. With the majority of games that release in a whirlwind of popularity, most of them fade into the background at one point or another. Not every title will reach the level of Fortnite or Counter-Strike, where popularity continues for several months or even years. To say Among Us is dead, is simply untrue.

Among Us Player Counts Are Still High

With hundreds of Twitch channels continuing to stream the game, plentiful viewers, and tens of thousands of players still playing the game on Steam alone, the social deduction game is going strong. This means there’s still a big portion of the community playing even if the wildfire of its popularity lulled into a campfire. As for whether or not that interest will flare again, whether Among Us will continue to decline, or even whether Among Us 2 will be better than the first, remains to be seen. For the time being, however, players seem to be enjoying the game.

With the simplistic nature, long-term engagement may not be possible. Turning on Among Us and playing a round takes only minutes, and the mechanics are so easy to understand that nearly anyone can pick the game up without having to feel completely invested. This has added to the game’s popularity, but at the same time, without a sense of investment, putting it down and never coming back to it is just as easy.

Saying that Among Us is dead can be an easy thing, since mainstream popularity has faded. Some games certainly pass that wildfire threshold and are hardly ever heard of again. Others gain a cult following where a game’s popularity is held for years-on-end. Right now, Among Us continues to retain a sturdy hold in the gaming scene, but only time will tell how long that will be.
