Is Final Fantasy 16 Coming to PS4?

A reveal trailer for Final Fantasy 16 was dropped during the recent PlayStation 5 Showcase event. This trailer shows that Final Fantasy 16 might be a return to form for the series, as the high fantasy setting, lack of machinery, and the importance of crystals all reflect themes from less recent titles. Another way that Final Fantasy 16 is making a return to form has disappointed some fans though, as the game was announced as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, though only for a limited time.

It’s been a while since a Final Fantasy game has been released as a PlayStation exclusive. After all, the 14th and 15th installments were released on multiple platforms. Since releasing on multiple platforms seemed to have become the norm, Final Fantasy 16 being a PlayStation 5 exclusive is likely painful for fans who followed the series on PC and Xbox. Fortunately, the release trailer seems to suggest that this exclusivity will only be for a limited time. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to say anything about whether or not the game will appear on older gen consoles.

So far, the only thing fans know for sure about the future of Final Fantasy 16, besides its limited time PlayStation 5 exclusivity, is that more information can be expected in 2021. Whether or not this information will include expected release times for other systems is yet to be seen, but this time frame doesn’t look great for those hoping for it on PlayStation 4.

FF16 Is Probably Not Cross-Gen

Even if Final Fantasy 16 is released sometime in the later half of 2021, that’s still nearly a year into the life cycle of the PlayStation 5, which will give it plenty of time to stop sharing titles with the PlayStation 4. Perhaps the biggest nail in the coffin for those hoping to see Final Fantasy 16 show up on PlayStation 4 is that the game is specifically being released as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, not a general PlayStation exclusive. This doesn’t mean that it’s impossible for the game to show up on PlayStation 4, but it does seem likely that the system will be considered irrelevant by the time it’s released.

Many fans of the Final Fantasy series have been hoping that Final Fantasy 16 would be a return to form, bringing back the high fantasy setting of older titles. It seems like they got their wish, as the game’s reveal trailer seems rife with fantastical themes. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only theme that has returned to the Final Fantasy series though, as the series has long been known for being PlayStation exclusive in the past. Fans can’t be sure what other systems will receive the game after its limited time PlayStation 5 exclusivity, but the odds aren’t looking good for older generation systems like the PlayStation 4. Unless contradictory information comes out, it’s probably safe to bet that fans will have to grab a PlayStation 5 if they hope to play Final Fantasy 16 when it releases.
