Warning: SPOILERS for Hanna Season 3.

While Hanna season 3 marks the end of Amazon Prime Video’s international action series, can it someday return for season 4? Created by David Farr, Hanna is an adaptation of the 2011 feature film directed by Joe Wright and starring Saoirse Ronan, which Farr also co-wrote. Hanna season 1 premiered in March 2019 on Amazon Prime Video and season 2 followed up in July 2020. Prior to Hanna season 3’s November 24, 2021, release date, Amazon announced the cancelation of the show, which stars Esme Creed-Miles as the eponymous heroine.

Hanna season 1 began as a reworking of the 2011 Hanna film’s story but by the end of the season, the series had fully delved into Hanna’s origins. Raised in isolation in the wilderness and expertly trained by her father, former CIA agent Erik Heller (Joel Kinnaman), Hanna was the only survivor of the first generation of UTRAX, a covert CIA operation breeding female super soldiers overseen by Marissa Wiegler (Mireille Enos). Hanna season 2 introduced an entire school of UTRAX agents, including Clara (Yasmin Monet Prince), Sandy (Áine Rose Daly), and Jules (Gianna Kiehl). By the end of Hanna season 2, Hanna and Marissa joined forces to take down UTRAX. They faced UTRAX’s creator, a powerful government official known as the Chairman (Ray Liotta), in Hanna season 3.

Hanna season 3 is only 6 episodes as opposed to the 8-episode order of season 1 and 2. The result is a no-nonsense, propulsive third act to the saga that brings the story of Hanna facing her creators and earning the right to choose her own destiny to a defined conclusion. While it’s disappointing that Hanna’s story has come to an end, here is what we know about the reasons why and if Hanna can ever continue as an Amazon Prime Video series.

Why Hanna Season 3 Is The Final Season

In an interview with Screen Rant, Hanna creator David Farr said that season 3 is the end because there is “no more story.” While the characters could continue, the main tale Farr wanted to tell was about Hanna growing up and reaching a form of adulthood. Hanna season 1 was about Hanna as a girl facing the world for the first time. Hanna season 2 saw the young heroine meet others like her and fight against the destiny UTRAX had planned for her. Finally, in season 3, Hanna confronts the man behind her creation and she gets to choose how to live the rest of her life. Farr always planned a 3-act structure to Hanna’s story and season 3 is the ending he always intended.

How Hanna Could Return For Season 4

David Farr told Screen Rant that Hanna season 4 is a possibility at some point in the future if he decides there is a new story to tell about Hanna. After the way Hanna season 3 ends, most of the principal adult characters in the story meet definitive ends, and the young super-soldier Hanna ends up in an entirely different place to start a new life for herself. But Farr indicated that Hanna returning for season 4 isn’t out of the question. If Farr feels there is a completely different and fresh tale he wants to tell about Hanna, Amazon Prime Video would likely produce Hanna season 4.

What Hanna Season 4 Could Be About

At the end of Hanna season 3, UTRAX is no more and Hanna leaves Europe behind to start a new life in the United States. If Hanna ever returns in season 4, it’s likely several years will have passed and Hanna will be an adult. Unfortunately, the CIA will always keep tabs on Hanna, so she could be pulled back into the life of a super-soldier and face a new set of enemies. In addition, many of Hanna’s fellow UTRAX graduates were left “in the wild” without supervision. It’s possible Hanna may end up facing some of her ‘sisters’ again, especially those who couldn’t acclimate to a normal life beyond being government assassins. Whether or not Hanna ever does return for season 4, the 3 seasons of Hanna on Amazon Prime Video tell a near-perfect, self-contained story about Hanna coming of age and fighting for the right to live her life as she wishes.
