Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film series is a cinematic masterpiece and one of the most successful trilogies in history, but can it be found on Netflix? J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel The Lord of The Rings was published in three volumes from July 1954 to October 1955, and has since become the subject of many analyses, has influenced the works of various artists, and has been adapted to different types of media.

Jackson’s live-action adaptation of The Lord of the Rings is the best known and most commercially successful film adaptation of Tolkien’s novel, and was divided into three films: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). The trilogy was not only a box office success but also critically acclaimed and took home a bunch of awards, including the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay (all for The Return of the King). Films as popular as these should be on Netflix’s catalog, right?

Lord of the Rings has a complicated relationship with Netflix. In order for the streaming platform to be able to add titles to its lists, it has to pay the studio holders to get the rights, and the more popular the film, the bigger the price – hence why big films usually don’t last long, or come and go like Lord of the Rings. The first film from the Lord of the Rings trilogy was already on Netflix US’ catalog at the beginning of 2018, and was removed months later only to be added again later on. The Two Towers and The Return of the King hadn’t been on Netflix US before due to Starz (and previously Hulu) holding the rights to them, but starting on September 1, 2019, Netflix users in the US can enjoy these two films – though not the first one, as it was removed in January 2019. However, other regions have been lucky enough to have the full trilogy available for streaming.

Netflix UK has had the pleasure of hosting the Lord of the Rings trilogy since November 2018, as well as Canada, the Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil, India, and Spain. Poland is only streaming The Fellowship of the Ring, and Netflix México has The Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King only. The films from the trilogy you can stream will depend on the region you’re in.

Lord of the Rings is on Netflix – but if you want to binge-watch the trilogy and live in the US, that won’t be possible. Still, two films are better than none, and with them coming and going from the platform, it’s better to enjoy them while they’re there. As for those lucky Netflix users living in regions where the three films are available: sit back and enjoy the experience.
