Warning! Spoilers ahead for Timeless #1

In Marvel Comics’ Timeless, Kang the Conqueror offers a glimpse into the future of the Marvel Universe, and it’s teased that Mary Jane Watson may replace Spider-Man. While Peter Parker has been sidelined in recent comics due to excessive radiation poisoning, his clone Ben Reilly has taken over as New York’s premier Webslinger. However, will Ben soon be replaced by Peter’s girlfriend as her own Spider-Woman in 2022?

In recent issues of The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker has been in the hospital after his recent encounter with the U-Fores, taking on too much radiation for his body to handle. Not only has he become very weak, but his spider-sense has been reversed, painfully warning him of the danger within his own body as opposed to external threats like it used to. However, while Ben Reilly was already chosen by the Beyond Corporation to be their official Spider-Man (seeing as how they own Spider-Man’s copyrighted name and likeness), Peter still gave Ben his blessing to web sling in his stead while he recovers.

However, Marvel Comics’ new Timeless #1 from Jed MacKay, Kev Walker, Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Mark Bagley, and Andrew Hennessy sees Kang the Conqueror monitoring future events from outside of time at one of his observation stations. While a variety of different events are seen, all are potential glimpses into the future such as Thanos wielding Thor’s hammer, Bucky killing Captain America, as well as a new Young Avengers team. However, there is also a shot of a woman with red hair donning a Spider mask. As such, it certainly seems as though MJ is being teased as a new Spider-Woman in the near future.

Furthermore, this glimpse into the future looks as though MJ might be joined by T’Challa’s on and off again love and former queen Storm (given the white hair). This would also tie in well with the featured line: “the brave honor the sacrifices of those in their hearts“, a potential tease to a future where both Peter and T’Challa are perhaps lost or believed to be dead with their loved ones carrying on their respective mantles. However, it’s also possible that this is just a look at a potential future that might not even come to pass in the main Marvel timeline.

Assuming that MJ (and perhaps Storm) do take on the roles of their loved ones, it will be exciting to discover if and how Mary Jane gains spider powers. Furthermore, it’s also possible that this isn’t Mary Jane at all, and this glimpse is instead a look into the far future where Peter and MJ’s daughter May takes after her father by becoming Spider-Girl and finally defeats Mephisto. Either way, Peter Parker and Mary Jane fans will just have to wait and see what the future holds for Spider-Man and any new successors to his name in the Marvel Universe.
