A scene included in the first trailer for Disney+’s Loki might tease the arrival of one of Marvel’s most evil characters: Mephisto. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been bringing characters from Marvel Comics to the big screen for over a decade, from classic superheroes like Spider-Man and Captain America to newer characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy, and with this universe continuing its expansion not only in film but TV as well, there are a lot more heroes and villains waiting to join.

The MCU has a long list of projects coming up in the near future, especially TV shows that will be exclusive to Disney+, and among those is Loki. As the title says, this TV series will focus on the God of Mischief after he created a new timeline in Avengers: Endgame, where he escaped from imprisonment following the Battle of New York thanks to the Tesseract. Loki will see the title character dealing with the TVA (Time Variance Authority) and jumping through time altering human history, but he might also encounter a very dangerous villain.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Loki trailer introduced the audience to Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson), a member of the TVA, and it included a very peculiar shot of Mobius and a young girl. In the background is a stained glass window, which wouldn’t be relevant if it didn’t have a devilish figure that Marvel fans will recognize. This horned figure might be Mephisto, a demon created by Stan Lee and John Buscema and who made his first appearance in The Silver Surfer #3 in 1968. Jealous of the worship of fire demon Zarathos, Mephisto – posing as Satan – created the Ghost Rider by bonding Zarathos to Johnny Blaze after the latter sold his soul. Mephisto was also a servant of Thanos during the latter’s quest for the Infinity Stones, but he wasn’t included in Avengers: Infinity War, and his role was given to Ebony Maw.

Mephisto can use his power for various purposes, and so can possess superhuman strength and change his shape and size, project illusions, manipulate memories, and alter time. This last one is what makes him a perfect addition to Loki and the MCU in general now that time has become a central theme in this universe, and so Mephisto could bring even more trouble for the TVA or Mobius could be looking for the demon’s help in some way, thus why his visit to a place with a stained glass window with his figure. However, it’s also worth noting that, at one point in his life, Mephisto manipulated the sorcerer Master Pandemonium into gathering the five fragments of his soul that were lost after an encounter with Franklin Richards. When Scarlet Witch tried to use magic to have children with Vision, she unknowingly summoned two of Pandemonium’s soul fragments which were then born as her twins. This revelation, along with the loss of her twins when they reabsorbed into him, drove Scarlet Witch insane.

Now, WandaVision is set to arrive before Loki, and it will see Scarlet Witch and Vision living together and forming a family through different decades, each one reflecting the style of the sitcoms of the time. One of those will see Scarlet Witch and Vision becoming parents of twins, which along with the time-warping vibe of the series and the return of Vision, have made way for numerous theories on how everything will be an illusion by Scarlet Witch as she is going insane, thus making way for the madness in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With both Loki and WandaVision tying into Doctor Strange’s second movie, Mephisto could be the connecting link, messing with Scarlet Witch’s story and also bringing chaos to Loki and the TVA. Mephisto’s introduction to the MCU could be happening sooner than fans expect, making way for a lot of chaotic possibilities in both the movies and the TV shows of the Marvel Universe.
