As a spin-off from the popular Minecraft sandbox game, Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler with similar aesthetics and more hack-and-slash combat. Players can join friends in procedurally-generated dungeons, either online or locally. At launch, Minecraft Dungeons didn’t have crossplay, but an update was supposed to add the feature to the game. Minecraft Dungeons supports both local and online co-op for up to four players. The online multiplayer feature is great, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic keeping many people away from their friends. Recent data from Microsoft, though, shows that 80% of Minecraft Dungeons players use couch co-op through Xbox Game Pass, showing that a majority prefers playing the game locally instead of online. This was based mostly on 2020 numbers, though, so the numbers could change for 2021 – especially given how crossplay works.

At launch, Minecraft Dungeons didn’t have crossplay – but an update adding the feature was promised by developers. As long as the update from November 2020 is installed, crossplay should be a feature in the game. The long-awaited feature is great, since players don’t have to worry about what platform their friends are using in order to enjoy Minecraft Dungeons anymore.

Since releasing in May 2020, the game gets regular updates. In fact, Minecraft Dungeons‘ biggest free update yet is coming later this month. Quality-of-life improvements and new content are vital to a game’s success, and Minecraft Dungeons has gotten an important update now that crossplay is supported. Perhaps this year, more players will enjoy the game online instead of locally, since platform restrictions for playing online with friends have been removed.

Additionally, for anyone who was waiting for crossplay to be supported before buying the game, the wait is over. Crossplay has been a part of Minecraft Dungeons since November 2020, and it’s currently available for PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox.
