Where can 2009 tearjerker My Sister’s Keeper be found online, and is it on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime? Prior to her retirement from acting in 2014, Cameron Diaz had been especially prolific, appearing in a mix of comedies, thrillers and dramas. She had appeared in hits like Bad Teacher and The Other Woman and was considered a highlight in Ridley Scott’s badly-received thriller The Counselor, which also starred Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz.

In 2009 she headlined an adaptation of the My Sister’s Keeper book by Jodi Picoult. The novel and book follow Anna Fitzgerald, a young girl who was biologically designed to be a “savior” sibling to her sister Kate, who is dying of leukemia. Over the years, Anna donates blood and bone marrow to Kate, but when she learns she’ll have to donate a kidney, she decides to sue her parents for medical emancipation to control her own body. My Sister’s Keeper cast Abigail Breslin as Anna, Sofia Vassilieva as Kate, with Cameron Diaz playing their mother Sara and Jason Patric as father Brian.

My Sister’s Keeper was directed by The Notebook’s Nick Cassavetes, and while it received mixed reviews it was a success, grossing over three times its production budget worldwide. While My Sister’s Keeper is currently available to stream on Netflix in the UK, it’s no longer on the platform in the US. The film isn’t on platforms like Hulu or Prime currently either.

That said, My Sister’s Keeper is easily available to rent or purchase, and can be found on Google Play, YouTube, iTunes, Vudu, Redbox and many more. Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva received good reviews for their performances in the movie, and they replaced the originally cast, real-life siblings Dakota and Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon). Dakota Fanning was set to play Kate, but dropped out when she refused to shave her head for the part; Elle followed soon after.

Fans of the My Sister’s Keeper book were upset with the way the movie reworked the ending, and while tearjerking in its own way, it fundamentally alters the point of the story. Author Jodi Picoult was also let down by how the ending was changed, stating on her Facebook fan page, “Although the director had indicated that he was going to keep my ending, in the end he did not hold true to his word. And if you think YOU were disappointed, well, you can imagine how I felt.” Nevertheless, she praised the movie’s performances and some of its new additions to the story, and it also drew new readers to her book.
