Nintendo has released an image of Mario relaxing on the beach, but the text that came with the post might be hinting at some kind of return for Super Mario Sunshine, which could possibly be a remake or a sequel.

Super Mario Sunshine was released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002. The story involves Mario and Princess Peach going on vacation to Isle Delfino, but the island is covered in slime. Mario teams up with a robotic cleaning device known as F.L.U.D.D., which Mario can use to spray jets of water that can destroy the slime. Princess Peach is quickly captured by a being known as Shadow Mario, who uses a magic paintbrush to cover Isle Delfino in gunk. It’s up to Mario to save the Princess and clean up Isle Delfino in the process.

Nintendo of America has uploaded a picture to Twitter that shows Mario wearing beach clothes and eating watermelon. The picture on its own isn’t anything special, but the accompanying text might be hinting at a future Super Mario Bros. title. The text says “No matter where your summer odyssey took you, we hope it was filled with sunshine!”, which fans believe is a hint at a sequel or remake of Super Mario Sunshine, or possibly upcoming DLC for Super Mario Odyssey that takes the player to Isle Delfino, as the word “odyssey” was also used.

Super Mario Sunshine was only ever released on the Nintendo GameCube, which means that there’s no way to play it on modern systems without resorting to emulation. An HD port of the original game could help fix some of the lingering technical issues with the original game, which was notorious for its overly-sensitive controls and for a camera that had a tendency to get caught on objects. It’s also possible that Isle Delfino could be added as a Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey as part of a new set of paid DLC, which is something that the game has lacked since release. Super Mario Odyssey has sold amazingly well, so there’s still a chance that DLC could be released for the game. There are several stages in Super Mario Odyssey that added new features and play styles, so the gimmick of the Isle Delfino Kingdom could be a return of the F.L.U.D.D. cleaning device.

The most recent games in the Super Mario Bros. series to be released were Super Mario Maker 2 for Nintendo Switch and Dr. Mario World for mobile phones. Nintendo has yet to announce any new Super Mario Bros. games for the near future and the Nintendo Switch’s 2019 exclusive line-up is packed, but if the rumors of a September Nintendo Direct are true, then a new Super Mario Bros. title for 2020 could be announced soon. The question now is whether the Super Mario Sunshine post is hinting at this new title or is Nintendo just messing with the fans?
