Pokémon Sword and Shield are the first entries in the long running creature catching series to introduce DLC content. There have been instances in previous generations of the series where players were able to acquire an exclusive downloadable Pokémon, but Sword and Shield went even farther with its bonus content. The first DLC, The Isle of Armor, released on June 17th and gave players an entire bonus island to explore with 100+ new Pokemon that hadn’t previously been in the game. The second DLC, The Crown Tundra, has yet to receive an official release date but is expected to be available sometime this Fall. Originally, it was announced that only two DLC were being released for Pokemon Sword and Shield, but a third DLC may actually be in the works.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Rumors swirled over the weekend after information leaked about the third Pokémon DLC, The Cinder Citadel. It’s hard to judge the accuracy of these rumors as none have been confirmed, but a lot of potential information on the DLC has been leaked. The Cinder Citadel is said to be a large Wild Area, filled with huge empty castles and ruins which players will explore as they help a Professor find out more information on an ancient Pokemon no expert can confirm ever existed. The Pokémon, Unown, is expected to make their long awaited return to the series in this DLC. It’s believed that the Unown will be key to uncovering the DLC’s legendary, which is rumored to be based on a Welsh dragon with Rock/Dragon typing.

The Cinder Citadel is expected to be released on Pokémon Day, February 27th, as part of Pokémon’s 25th anniversary according to the leak, but fans have their doubts. A shadow drop for something of this nature seems somewhat out of character for Game Freak, but seeing as it’s the 25th anniversary of Pokémon, this seems like a believable celebration. This also isn’t the first leak to mention The Cinder Citadel will be a part of Pokémon’s 25th anniversary celebration, as a June ninth leak detailed the first two DLC and also shared the third DLC’s release date.

Sinnoh Starters May Be Making A Return In Pokémon’s Next DLC

There are also a number of Pokémon rumored to get their own Galarian forms in The Cinder Citadel, the most notable of which being the Sinnoh Starters. It would be awesome to see new variations of Turtwig, Chimchar, and Priplup, but the series has never created new forms for starter Pokémon, so take this rumor with a grain of salt. Other Pokémon rumored to get Galarian forms include Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Hitmontop, and Bisharp. It is also rumored that the Sinnoh starters will receive their own Gigantamax transformation, which seems much more believable seeing as the Kanto and Galar starters can all G-Max.

Despite all this information, there are some conflicting rumors about the third DLC, as some leaks have called it The Scepter Sea. Based on the rumors, The Cinder Citadel and The Scepter Sea have a number of differences. The Scepter Sea is believed to be based on Ireland. It will feature G-Max forms of Metagross and Kommo-o, no new Galarian forms, and the DLC’s legendary is rumored to be a Steel/Water type named, Seancherine. It is also rumored that as part of The Scepter Sea, all Pokémon will officially be available through Pokémon Home, so perhaps this third DLC will finish up the National Dex.

There’s so much information floating around about Pokémon’s next DLC that it’s difficult to tell which rumors are accurate. Considering all of the information that has been leaked, it seems like a safe bet a third DLC is coming to Pokémon Sword and Shield.
