Where can Resident Evil: The Final Chapter be seen online and is it available on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime? The history of video game to movie adaptations is a famously messy one, with very few of them capturing what made the source material work. The Resident Evil movie franchise is a good example of this, with the six films barely resembling any of their video game counterparts outside of some familiar monsters or characters. Instead, they focused on original character Alice (Milla Jovovich), who starts the first movie in a zombie-infested lab and eventually finds herself humanity’s last hope.

Fans of the Resident Evil games are understandably mixed on the movie series. Outside of maybe the first entry none of the film’s attempt to recapture the survival horror aspect of the game series, with each film trying to outdo the last in terms of outlandish action and setpieces. Regardless, the movie franchise has a fanbase and is – to date – the most successful based on a video game, with films having collectively grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide.

Despite the franchise not being especially plot-heavy, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’s story did a good job of wrapping things up – and throwing in a couple of surprise twists. The movie isn’t currently available to stream on Netflix, Hulu or Prime in the U.S., but it can be found on Fubo and DirecTV. Its also available to rent or purchase from the usual outlets, including Vudu, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon and FandangoNOW.

While Resident Evil: The Final Chapter left the door open slightly for future adventures, it seems doubtful Milla Jovovich’s Alice will return for a future movie. A planned film reboot that will be more in line with the horror roots of the games is in development, however, with 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts currently attached to helm. A Resident Evil Netflix series is also in development though its release date is unknown.

It appears the success of the Resident Evil movies also inspired the games to take an increasingly action-focused direction, reaching its nadir with 2012’s bloated blockbuster Resident Evil 6. The games have since course-corrected, with the remake of Resident Evil 2 and other recent entries proving that a more old-fashioned survival horror approach can still work wonders. It will be interesting to see if audiences accept a more horror-flavored Resident Evil movie since the previous franchise sold itself as an action series.
