Locket is one of the most popular smartphone apps of 2022, and unsurprisingly, it’s something that iPhone and Android users alike are trying to get their hands on. Every now and then, an app comes around that seems to get the attention of everyone. In 2013, Flappy Bird was all the rage as one of the most addictive mobile games at the time. Millions of people downloaded it, it was talked about all over social media, and the developer eventually removed it from the App Store and Google Play Store because they couldn’t handle its popularity. Similar hype’s been created by other apps over the years, too — such as TikTok, Vine, Angry Birds, etc.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Most recently, an app by the name of ‘Locket’ has been making the rounds as the smartphone app to download. It was released on New Year’s Day and almost instantly became viral on TikTok. The idea behind Locket is simple: Users download the Locket app, add the widget to their home screen, and they can then send photos directly to Locket widgets on other people’s phones. It’s a fun way to share pictures with close friends and family. It’s also more intimate and unique than simply sharing images on Google Photos or Snapchat.

Whenever an app like Locket gets as popular as it does, it immediately raises an important question — How can people download it? Locket is available for iPhones as a 100 percent free app. Simply open the App Store, search for ‘Locket,’ and download the ‘Locket Widget’ app by developer Matthew Moss. Unfortunately, these same steps don’t apply to Android users. That’s because, at the time of publication, the Locket app isn’t available for Android. There are dozens of apps on the Google Play Store with names like ‘Locket Photo Frame’ and ‘Locket Photo Editor,’ but none of them are the same Locket app that’s on the iPhone.

Don’t Expect A Locket Android App Any Time Soon

While it’s always possible the Locket app eventually comes to Android, users shouldn’t hold their breath for it happening in the immediate future. Moss hasn’t announced any plans for an Android version, and hasn’t given any indication that one is coming soon. Considering he’s the sole developer behind Locket — and likely didn’t anticipate just how popular the app would be — it’ll be a while before Locket comes to Android (if it ever does in the first place).

In the meantime, Android users can partially mimic the Locket experience with Google Photos widgets. Press and hold on a blank part of the home screen, tap ‘Widgets,’ scroll to ‘Photos,’ and choose either of the two options. The ‘People & Pets’ widget shows “highlights of your family and friends, both furry and otherwise,” while the ‘Your memories’ widget helps users “rediscover moments from Google Photos.” After adding one of the Google Photos widgets, Android users can then choose between one of six frame styles to give it a personal touch.

Seeing photos from your own library instead of having other people send them to your home screen isn’t exactly the same idea, but it’s the closest Android users can get to Locket right now. Is it annoying? Absolutely. But even in 2022, this is the reality for many apps. Developing for Android is hard. There are countless models and screen sizes to account for, multiple software versions, etc. They aren’t impossible hurdles to overcome, but they are imposing for small development teams. And, in this case, that means no Locket app for Android users.
