Saturday Night Live is due to return after a short hiatus, but is there a new episode tonight? SNL season 46 premiered on October 3, 2020 with host Chris Rock and musical guest Megan Thee Stallion. The first five episodes of the season covered the lead up to the U.S. Presidential Election on November 3. On November 7, in the SNL episode immediately following the election, Dave Chapelle hosted, as he also did after the 2016 election. The entire first half of season 46 focused largely on the race between former President Donald Trump and then-presidential candidate (now current president) Joe Biden.

Alec Baldwin has played Trump on Saturday Night Live for more than four years, but during that time various comedians and actors have portrayed Biden. For the first half of season 46, Biden was memorably parodied by Jim Carrey, whose wild and energetic impersonation of Biden received mixed reviews. On December 6, 2020, Carrey announced he would no longer appear as Joe Biden on SNL – after he’d already guest-starred in more episodes than was originally planned.

Saturday Night Live went on hiatus after December 19th, when Kristen Wiig hosted and Alex Moffat stepped into the role of then President-Elect Biden. SNL fans have been looking forward to the show’s return, which was initially scheduled to return tonight but the next episode of SNL has been postponed to January 30 after delays attributed to Covid-19. The episode almost certainly would have featured notable events (and subsequent memes) from this week’s Presidential Inauguration. SNL generally tries to cover only the most recent events, but it would be reasonable to expect at least some reference to the inauguration.

The delay also leaves Saturday Night Live viewers to wonder whether Moffat will continue playing Biden or whether SNL will find another recurring guest-star to fill the role. Previous comedians and actors who have portrayed Joe Biden include Jason Sudeikis, Woody Harrelson, and John Mulaney. SNL could ask invite of these actors to return, but it’s just as likely that Moffat will continue portraying President Biden since Moffat’s Biden was met with positive reviews.

Instead of a new episode tonight, NBC will air a rerun of SNL, in which Moffat’s debut as Biden can be seen. The episode from December 12, 2020 was hosted by Timothée Chalamet and featured musical guest Dua Lipa. Assuming there are no further delays (Covid-19 related or otherwise) Saturday Night Live will return next week on January 30, 2021, with host Regina King and musical guest Nathaniel Rateliff.
