Warning: the following contains spoilers for the IT novel and possibly IT Chapter Two.

What happened to Stan Uris in Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel, IT? The character was portrayed by Wyatt Oleff in Andy Muschietti’s film adaptation, IT. The sequel to the 2017 movie, IT Chapter Two, premieres September 6 and will feature Andy Bean in the adult version of Stan.

Stan Uris was one of the original members of the Losers’ Club. He was very meticulous and suffered from OCD. Stan and the Losers were bullied by Henry Bowers during much of their younger years while living in Derry, Maine. Out of the group, Stan was the most skeptical in terms of Pennywise the Clown’s existence. When the Losers shared their encounters with Pennywise, Stan was the most fearful and struggled with the plan to face the evil entity.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

After the Losers’ Club defeated IT in the sewers within the first half of the novel, Stan was the one to initiate the blood oath. The entire group agreed to return to Derry when Pennywise emerged 27 years later. In the 2017 movie based on the early lives of the Losers’ Club, Stan was attacked by Pennywise in the sewers and suffered injuries to his face. In both versions, Stan suffered metaphorical scarring that he would never be able to overcome.

Pennywise returned 27 years later and wreaked havoc on the town of Derry just as the Losers’ Club expected. Since his childhood trauma, Stan went on to marry a woman named Patricia. He was doing well in life with his accounting job in Atlanta, Georgia. For the most part, Stan was able to push his fears away in order to live a normal life. When the murders ramped up again, Mike called the rest of the Losers’ Club to urge them to come back to Derry. He was the only one who stayed in town, working in Derry’s local library.

When Stan spoke to Mike on the phone, he was unable to comprehend the fact that IT was back. All of the terrifying memories and pain that came with them instantly rushed back to Stan. In reality, Stan carried those fears with him his whole life but he became an expert at hiding them. After speaking with Mike, Stan told his wife that he was going to take a bath. When he got in the tub, Stan cut his wrists in the shape of a “T” before writing the word “IT” on the wall with his own blood.

Stan’s suicide was included in the IT miniseries and it seems very likely that a similar event will occur in IT Chapter Two. The adult version of Stan has been notably absent in the trailers for the sequel film. It’s been revealed that Stan does have a wife and a job in accounting in the movie adaptation so it seems as though the character is following the same arc as the book and miniseries. Stan’s death gave the rest of the Losers’ Club motivation into taking down Pennywise once and for all and it looks like his tragic ending will be the driving force for his friends in the movie.
