Filmmaker Edgar Wright expressed his interest in taking on the James Bond franchise and he’s got a story idea ready for the next 007 movie. The British director and screenwriter is no stranger to big-budget action franchises, as he’s previously written and directed box office films such as The World’s End, The Adventures of Tintin, and Shaun of the Dead. Wright also co-wrote the screenplay for Marvel’s Antman starring Paul Rudd but left the project due to creative differences.

Wright could be in the running to direct the new James Bond movie after the release of No Time to Die. The film marked a historic event as it was the 25th installment for the Bond franchise since 1962. It was also Daniel Craig’s fifth and final outing as the legendary MI6 agent. While No Time to Die brings Craig’s reign to an end, its bittersweet ending signals a new era for the spy franchise and opens the iconic character to new possibilities.

Speaking on the podcast Happy Sad Confused, Wright revealed that he’s more than willing to take a shot at a new Bond movie. In fact, the 47-year-old director said that he already has an idea in mind on what the next 007 film should be like. According to Wright, Bond movies tend to be either “dark chocolate or milk chocolate.” With Craig’s stint leaning towards the dark side, Wright asserted that the succeeding films in the franchise should be another “milk chocolate Bond.” Read his comments below:

Because I don’t think there’s anything to be gained by continuing in the same vein, and I think it would certainly be interesting to try and… I mean, I do have a take [on Bond], and if they ever ask me, I’ll pitch it to them [laughs], so I’m not going to say it, but when I see some of the names being bandied around, I can’t quite see it, and they seem like Daniel Craig II.

It’s clear that Wright intends to give the future Bond film a new direction and mix its signature action scenes with some light humor. Since Craig’s departure was confirmed, many names have been thrown as to who will next play Agent 007. However, it seems that the franchise is in no hurry to find its new Bond or craft a short-list of possible directors after No Time to Die’s cinematic release.

Interestingly, Craig initially received criticisms when he was cast as James Bond for Casino Royale. Many fans argued that the actor’s looks didn’t fit the Bond persona: the smooth-talking, clean-shaven image popularized by Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Pierce Brosnan. However, the 2006 film’s box office success proved that Craig’s strategy suited this new era of Bond and gave the character a deeper and more emotional story arc. That said, there’s merit to Wright’s suggestion to change the pace of the next Bond movie. To follow in Craig’s footsteps will prove problematic as the next movie and its actor will always be compared to the past five films. Whoever takes on the Bond mantle will surely have big shoes to fill and the heavy burden of continuing the iconic character’s legacy.
