James Gunn Confirms Adam Warlock Casting For GOTG3
James Gunn has confirmed a recent report that Will Poulter will be joining the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the cosmic being known as Adam Warlock. The MCU first teased Warlock’s appearance during one of the many end-credit sequences of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where it is revealed that the gold-skinned Sovereign artificially engineered a being known simply as “Adam.” This scene was the first and last reference to Warlock, as the MCU was rapidly shifting gears toward capping off the Infinity Saga at the time. Now, with Gunn back in the writer/director’s chair to wrap up his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, the long-awaited arrival of the fan-favorite character is just around the corner.
Adam Warlock plays a significant role in the Jim Starlin’s The Infinity Gauntlet comic book storyline, from which 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War takes heavy inspiration. Due to the timing of the Adam tease during GOTG2’s end credits (i.e. a year prior to Infinity War), fans speculated that Warlock would play an analogous role in the highly anticipated Avengers sequel; however, both Infinity War and Endgame came and went without even a passing reference to him. Now, Guardians will resolve this dangling story thread with Will Poulter set to star in the role.
In a recent tweet, Gunn confirmed a report that Poulter had been cast as Warlock by welcoming the actor into the Guardians family. The director, who is known for actively participating in fan discourse on social media, humorously stated that this news wasn’t a “false rumor” that he could “strike down.” Check out Gunn’s full tweet below:
As you guys know I often strike down false rumors, so… um…
Welcome to the Guardians family, Will Poulter. He’s an amazing actor and wonderful guy. See you in a couple weeks. #AdamWarlock #GotGVol3 https://t.co/RaNeGDIC0E

Gunn is highly keyed in to fan discourse, often chirping in himself whenever he sees misinformation disseminating about his projects. In fact, the director recently stepped in himself to debunk a rumor involving his upcoming Peacemaker HBO Max series. His candidness is a breath of fresh air in an industry that so fervently values secrecy.
With the threat of Thanos and the Infinity Stones now vanquished, it’s likely that Poulter’s version of the character will depart from his comic counterpart in drastic ways. For example, Warlock will likely be unable to possess his symbiotic relationship with the Soul Stone like he has in the comics due to Thanos destroying every Infinity Stone in Endgame. Regardless, it’s exciting to finally have a face to the name after the character was first teased four years ago – six, by the time Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters.
