Warning: Contains spoilers for Peacemaker episode 3.

James Gunn is using his Peacemaker TV show to point out some of the sillier elements of the DC universe with his latest gag highlighting a problem with the Batmobile. James Gunn has become an important name in comic book adaptations, helping to introduce the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy as well as reviving the DCEU’s The Suicide Squad franchise. While he provides some great comic deep cuts, he also seems to be using his new position to point out some of the more ridiculous things that turn up in the world of comic books.

In Peacemaker episode 3, “Better Goff Dead,” Peacemaker (John Cena) and the team are on an extremely clandestine mission to assassinate a United States senator and his family who are believed to be Butterflies. While Peacemaker and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) are in the sniper’s nest, Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) appears and risks putting the mission in jeopardy until he ultimately is the one to make the kill shots. When asked how he got there, Vigilante (AKA Adrian Chase) explained “I followed you guys in my Vigilante-mobile.”

Peacemaker is surprised to hear that Vigilante has a Vigilante-mobile and asks when he got it. Vigilante explains that Peacemaker has been in it, and Peacemaker argues that it is just his Chrysler Sebring. Vigilante argues that it can still be a Vigilante-mobile and ridicules the idea of making it recognizable painting it purple with a big red “V” on the hood, noting that he’d instantly get pulled over. Vigilante is obviously right and even Peacemaker agrees that he shouldn’t do that, as Vigilante is wanted by the police for his actions. However, this is an obvious jab at how ridiculous Batman’s own Batmobile is – given that he is regularly wanted by both the police and major criminals, and yet he drives around in the most recognizable car in Gotham City.

In different portrayals of Batman, his Batmobile has changed dramatically. However, one thing remains consistent, and that is that it never looks like a normal car that could ever blend in. Given that a lot of Batman’s activities take place outside of his Batmobile, the ability to leave it somewhere undetected would seem useful, but even in Batman: The Animated Series the issues with this were raised when his car when in the episode “I’ve Got Batman In My Basement,” a child helps to keep him concealed and has to hide the Batmobile under old cardboard boxes. Some versions of the Batmobile have worked around this by having the car have various defenses against someone trying to steal it when it is left parked somewhere, but Peacemaker makes a fair point by noting that it would still be easy to track where Batman is headed in the city when the best camouflage the Batmobile has is that it is black.

James Gunn seems to have pretty free reign to play around with superhero universes at this point, and this episode 3 jab at Batman’s Batmobile should come as no surprise given what has already appeared in the previous episodes. In the first few minutes of episode 1, “A Whole New Whirled,” James Gunn used Peacemaker to poke fun at Aquaman as he assures a janitor that Aquaman has sex with fish (it’s unclear if Peacemaker thinks this is true). Then, in Peacemaker episode 2, “Best Friend, For Never,” Gunn has John Economos (Steve Agee) and Peacemaker discuss the existence of Bat-Mite, a character rarely brought up and considered one of Batman’s most ridiculous sidekicks. All of these gags help to demonstrate that Peacemaker is not a show that takes itself too seriously, an important step given that so much of the DCEU is concerned with being dark and gritty.

Peacemaker releases new episodes Thursdays on HBO Max.
