James Gunn’s upcoming film, The Suicide Squad, apparently features a scene with full-frontal male nudity. Gunn’s standalone sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad is set to premiere next week on August 6, 2021. While it’s long been known that Gunn’s new suerphero flick would be rated R for strong violence and language, it seems there may be another reason behind that rating.

Gunn made the decision to write and direct The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. shortly after he was temporarily fired from Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Gunn’s upcoming film is a new take on Task Force X and is completely disconnected from David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad. This means that Gunn’s film is accessible to everyone, regardless if they’ve seen Ayer’s flick or not. Based on his experience bringing the Guardians franchise to life, WB quickly snatched up Gunn for his unique ability to wonderfully craft comic book adaptations. Since Gunn was able to bring great success to characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, WB is hopeful that he could do the same for DC. According to early reviews of The Suicide Squad it seems that the studio’s hopes have paid off.

In a tweet from Brian over at Pop Culture of Leftovers, who was lucky enough to see a sneak a peek at the finished movie, Gunn’s upcoming film, The Suicide Squad, features full-frontal male nudity. While Brian doesn’t go into specifics, he does offer a preview (or warning) of what fans can expect to see, which is a flaccid phallus in a superhero movie. View Brian’s full tweet below:

Despite the very violent nature of The Suicide Squad, and apparently the graphic imagery, early reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Critics have been praising Gunn’s stylistic and comedic flair that expertly balances the R-rating with action and, even, horror. Gunn’s past experience with horror, in his early films such as Slither, have helped him bring a sense of eerie creepiness and brutal kills to a movie about a group of anit-heroes rising to the occasion to save the world. Critics have gone so far as to point out that Gunn is the only director that could make a film like The Suicide Squad because of his unique filmmaking style, which offers a fresh take on the genre.

As Gunn’s film climbs towards setting a superhero movie record on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear the movie’s R-rating may actually be a strength rather than a hindrance. Yes, the film does seem to feature at least one scene of full-frontal male nudity, as Brian points out in his tweet. However, in a movie filled with bloodshed and mayhem, the nudity should hardly come as a shock in today’s cinematic landscape, especially considering nudity is more natural than a talking shark devouring a whole person in one gulp. The faint of heart may just simply want to close their eyes during the nudity, and then sit back to enjoy the rest of The Suicide Squad.
