James Wan announced a release date for his upcoming horror movie Malignant and shared a teaser image from the film. Earlier this month, Warner Bros. released a trailer showcasing clips from their 2021 lineup of movies that will have simultaneous releases in theaters and on HBO Max which provided a first look at James Wan’s Malignant. In a brief clip, a creepy shadowy figure can be seen rising up behind Annabelle Wallis’s lead character as she lies awake in bed.

In 2004, Wan’s breakthrough film Saw helped launch him into stardom. Since then he has been the filmmaker behind the Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring series, while also directing installments of other famous franchises such as Furious 7 and the DCEU’s Aquaman. Over a year ago, Wan said he would be returning to his “indie roots” with his next horror film, which he described as a “hard-R thriller” with “old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets.” Just as Wan intended, Malignant received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America earlier this month for “strong horror violence and gruesome images, and for language.

On Instagram, James Wan announced that Malignant will open in theaters, IMAX, and HBO Max on September 10th. Wan also shared some teaser art for the film, an ominous image of a gloved hand wielding a blade adorned with golden wings. Wan made the announcement Tuesday, and it was shared across Warner Bros’ social media channels.

Other than Annabelle Wallis, the film’s cast includes Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, Jake Abel, Jacqueline McKenzie and Ingrid Bisu. While the plot remains unknown, Malignant is being billed as “Wan’s return to his roots with this new original horror thriller.” Considering its September 10th release date, there is a good chance a trailer for Malignant will be released at some point in the spring, which will provide more insight into the plot.

Malignant’s release is scheduled for the weekend after Labor Day which Warner Bros. considers to be a lucrative time to release horror pictures, with The Nun and both installments of It acting as past examples. Therefore, it is clear that Warner Bros. has a lot of confidence in Malignant to grant it such a prime release slot. Over the course of his entire career, Wan has come up with innovative ideas and executed them well. Since it appears Malignant is influenced by Giallo films, it will be interesting to see if Wan can bend the genre in a way that is original and exciting.
